Miss Theodosia Baxter, a 36-year-old woman, returns to her hometown after three years of traveling abroad. She settles into her family's old house, which is located next to a small, rundown house occupied by a large family of children, the Flaggs. The story begins with Miss Theodosia's encounter with two of the Flagg children, Evangeline and Elly Precious, who are sitting on her front porch. The children are surprised to see Miss Theodosia, as they had been using her porch to escape the heat. Miss Theodosia is surprised by the children's presence and learns that their mother is away taking care of her twin sister, Aunt Sarah, who has fallen down the cellar stairs. The children's mother had planned to whitewash Miss Theodosia's white dresses, which she wears exclusively, but now Stefana, the eldest Flagg child, offers to do the task. As they work, Miss Theodosia learns more about the Flagg family and their struggles, and she begins to form a bond with them.
