Chapter Summary of Oathbringer

Prologue: To Weep

Eshonai, a member of the Parshendi people, reflects on her initial encounters with humans and their vastly different culture. She is now in the human city of Kholinar, where a treaty between their peoples is being celebrated. While exploring the palace, Eshonai stumbles upon King Gavilar, who reveals his knowledge of a device called a fabrial that can harness Stormlight. He expresses his desire to unite his people and restore their connection to their gods, which he believes will bring about a new era of prosperity. However, Eshonai is horrified by his intentions, as her people had abandoned their gods to gain freedom. The king's words spark a sense of urgency and danger, leading Eshonai to conspire with her leaders, the Five, to take drastic action to prevent the king's plans from coming to fruition. The chapter culminates with Eshonai playing the drums to calm her anxiety, while also coming to terms with the weight of the decision she and the Five have made, which will have far-reaching consequences.

1. Broken and Divided

Dalinar Kholin seeks answers in his visions, which are immersive messages from the dead god, Honor. In his latest vision, he explores the ruins of Kholinar, searching for clues about the coming destruction. The vision reveals a dark figure in black Shardplate with nine shadows and glowing red eyes, who Dalinar realizes is the enemy's champion. The figure is associated with a brilliant, yet terrible, golden light known as Odium. After the vision, Dalinar is determined to unite the world against the enemy and prepare for the impending storm and Voidbringers. He discusses his plan with Navani, emphasizing the need to use the Oathgates to move troops and support each other. However, their conversation is interrupted by a scout who informs them that Highprince Torol Sadeas has been murdered, introducing a new layer of complexity and tension to their already daunting task.

2. One Problem Solved

The discovery of Highprince Torol Sadeas's lifeless body sparks tension among the soldiers in Urithiru, with some accusing Dalinar's men of murder. However, Dalinar is more concerned with the implications of Sadeas's death, recognizing that he was a capable general who could have contributed to their fight against the Voidbringers. To address the growing instability, Dalinar assigns tasks to his allies: Aladar is tasked with establishing order and a policing force, Sebarial with managing commerce and supplies, and Adolin with training the armies. Meanwhile, Dalinar reflects on the gravity of their situation, knowing that the Everstorm will return and that they must unify Roshar to withstand the impending Desolation. He entrusts Renarin and Shallan with the task of mastering their Radiant powers, believing that they will be crucial in leading other Radiants against the Voidbringers. As Dalinar looks out upon the city, he is resolute in his determination to unify Roshar and prepare for the coming war.

3. Momentum

The chapter delves into Dalinar's past, thirty-four years ago, where he is seen leading his elites in a battle against an enemy town. He employs his favored tactic of "hammer and anvil" to crush the enemy forces. Despite being outnumbered, Dalinar's elites manage to break through the enemy lines, and he engages in a fierce duel with the enemy brightlord. After a intense fight, Dalinar emerges victorious, killing the brightlord and shattering the enemy's morale. However, he is soon shot by an archer from a distance, and he sets out to capture the archer, who is revealed to be an assassin. Dalinar is impressed by the archer's skills and offers him a place among his elites in exchange for his loyalty. The archer, whose name is not revealed, agrees, and Dalinar spares the town from looting as promised. The chapter concludes with Dalinar meeting up with Torol Sadeas, who is concerned about Dalinar's injuries and the potential consequences of sparing the town. Dalinar's actions and decisions in this chapter showcase his leadership, tactical prowess, and complex personality, particularly his ability to inspire loyalty and his willingness to show mercy.

4. Oaths

The Everstorm returns, and Dalinar feels an unsettling presence within it, which the Stormfather confirms is the enemy riding the storm. As the storm rages on, Dalinar reflects on his past and his relationship with Navani, whom he decides to marry in a non-traditional ceremony on the rooftop of Urithiru. The Stormfather unexpectedly appears and blesses their union, with Navani and Dalinar exchanging oaths to each other. The ceremony is witnessed by their friends and family, including Elhokar, who gives his blessing despite initial reservations. After the ceremony, Dalinar speaks with Kadash, an ardent who is obligated to report the unconventional marriage to the ardentia. Kadash expresses concerns about Dalinar's recent claims that the Almighty is dead and warns him that the ardentia will not be pleased. Dalinar stands by his beliefs, feeling bound to the truth and to the Stormfather, and the two friends part ways, with Kadash advising Dalinar to be cautious in his words and actions.

5. Hearthstone

Kaladin returns to his hometown of Hearthstone, only to find it devastated by the Everstorm and the transformation of the parshmen into Voidbringers. He had hoped to arrive before the storm and prevent the disaster, but he was too late. As he approaches the town, he notices that many buildings are destroyed or damaged, and there is no sign of life. However, he sees a light coming from the manor house, indicating that someone or something has survived. Kaladin cautiously approaches the manor, ready to face whatever he might find, but instead of a Voidbringer, he is met by a human guardsman who is wary of him. The guardsman demands that Kaladin identify himself, and Kaladin, though unarmed, is forced to comply, wondering if the guardsman is a survivor or part of an expedition to investigate the aftermath of the disaster.

6. Four Lifetimes

Kaladin returns to his hometown of Hearthstone, where he finds the town devastated by the Everstorm and many of its residents taking shelter in the manor of the town's lord, Roshone. As he navigates the manor, Kaladin is met with a mix of fear and suspicion by the townspeople, who do not recognize him due to his changed appearance. He eventually finds his parents, Lirin and Hesina, who are overjoyed to see him and welcome him back home. However, their reunion is complicated by the presence of Roshone's guards, who are aware of Kaladin's status as a runaway slave and a deserter from the army. Kaladin's parents try to intervene on his behalf, offering to buy his freedom and seeking to resolve the situation through official channels. Meanwhile, Kaladin struggles to come to terms with his past and his feelings of guilt and responsibility, particularly regarding the death of his brother Tien. The chapter culminates with Kaladin confronting Roshone, who has a history of cruelty and abuse, and punching him in the face as an act of defiance and revenge for past wrongs.

7. A Watcher at the Rim

Kaladin returns to his hometown of Hearthstone, where he finds the town devastated by the Everstorm and many of its residents taking shelter in the manor of the town's lord, Roshone. He confronts Roshone, who had brutalized his family in the past, but instead of seeking revenge, Kaladin decides to focus on the larger threat of the Voidbringers. He meets with the town's guards and Roshone's wife, Laral, who has become a strong and capable leader. Kaladin uses his Shardblade to assert his authority and demands that the town prepare for the return of the Everstorm. He also discovers that Laral has a spanreed, a device that allows for long-distance communication, and uses it to contact Dalinar Kholin, who instructs him to scout out the enemy and report back. Kaladin decides to hunt down the Voidbringers, but not before visiting his family and meeting his new younger brother, Oroden. He offers to take his family to safety, but his father refuses to leave, citing his duty as a surgeon to help the townspeople. Kaladin then reveals to the town that he is a member of the refounded Knights Radiant and promises to protect them, before departing into the night to begin his mission.

8. A Powerful Lie

Shallan struggles to come to terms with her past and her role as a Radiant, using drawing as a way to cope with her emotions. She is summoned by Dalinar to discuss the political situation in Roshar and how to unite the kingdoms against the Voidbringers. During the meeting, Shallan uses her powers to create a detailed map of Roshar, which is revealed to be influenced by the Stormfather. Dalinar uses this map to outline his plan to protect the cities with Oathgates and make them bastions of light and strength against the Voidbringers. He identifies key locations, including Azir, Jah Keved, and Thaylenah, as crucial to their efforts. However, their discussion is interrupted by news of another murder, adding to the growing sense of tension and urgency in Urithiru.

9. The Threads of a Screw

Shallan accompanies Dalinar and his guards to the scene of a brutal murder, where they find the body of a lighteyed officer named Vedekar Perel. The crime scene bears a striking resemblance to the murder of Highprince Sadeas, with the victim stabbed in the eye and lying in a similar position. Dalinar tasks Adolin with investigating the murder, working with Aladar's policing team to uncover the truth. Adolin seems troubled by the discovery, and Shallan senses that he may be hiding something. As they leave the scene, Dalinar and Navani depart to inform Sebarial of the murder, while Adolin sets out to begin his investigation, determined to find the killer. Meanwhile, Renarin's enigmatic behavior and intense gaze suggest that he may know more about the situation than he is letting on.

10. Distractions

The chapter follows Kaladin as he continues his search for the Voidbringers, visiting the town of Hornhollow, where he learns of a recent attack on a grain storage. The townspeople describe the attackers as being unlike ordinary parshmen, wearing armor and having glowing red lights. Kaladin investigates the scene and gathers information, deciding to head towards Kholinar to track the Voidbringers. Meanwhile, Adolin visits the Kholin horse, Gallant, and reflects on his past experiences with horses. He is joined by Renarin, who reveals that he has created a new Radiant Shardblade and is struggling to come to terms with his role as a Radiant. Renarin gives Adolin his old Shardblade, citing that it hurts him to hold, and Adolin discovers that his wounded wrist has been healed after a moment of connection with Renarin's Radiant powers.

11. The Rift

The chapter delves into Dalinar's past, thirty-three years ago, where he, along with his brother Gavilar and friend Sadeas, are preparing to attack the city of Rathalas, also known as the Rift. Dalinar, wearing his newfound Shardplate, feels a sense of grandeur and power. As they begin their assault, Dalinar and his companions quickly breach the city's defenses, but not without Dalinar suffering injuries, including a shattered arm plate and broken fingers. Despite these setbacks, Dalinar presses on, driven by the Thrill of battle, and eventually faces off against Highlord Tanalan, the city's Shardbearer. After a fierce duel, Dalinar emerges victorious, claiming Tanalan's Shardblade, Oathbringer, as his own. As Dalinar sits amidst the devastation, he reflects on the true cost of their conquest and the weight of his actions, particularly the killing of Tanalan and the boy's declaration that they fight monsters. The chapter concludes with Gavilar's remarks on the need for discipline, order, and bureaucracy in their quest to unite Alethkar, leaving Dalinar to ponder the implications of their actions and the future of their kingdom.

12. Negotiations

Dalinar Kholin engages in diplomatic negotiations with various monarchs across Roshar, attempting to unite them against the Voidbringers. He speaks with the Emperor of Azir, who is evasive and non-committal, and Queen Fen of Thaylenah, who is blunt and skeptical. Despite the challenges, Dalinar remains determined to forge alliances and prepare for the coming war. Meanwhile, King Elhokar, Dalinar's nephew, approaches him and swears an oath, acknowledging Dalinar as his superior and granting him authority over the kingdom. Elhokar expresses his desire to lead a team to reclaim Alethkar and restore order, and Dalinar agrees to support him. The chapter concludes with Dalinar receiving a surprising message from King Taravangian of Jah Keved, who expresses his willingness to join forces and support Dalinar's efforts to protect Roshar.

13. Chaperone

Shallan practices her Lightweaving skills, transforming into her alternate persona, Veil, as she prepares to sneak out into the halls of Urithiru. She is interrupted by Adolin, who brings her food and books, including a report on the investigation into Vedekar Perel's murder. As they spend time together, Shallan and Adolin grow closer, sharing a kiss, but are hilariously interrupted by Pattern, Shallan's spren, who reminds them to behave. They discuss their relationships and insecurities, with Adolin expressing his worries about messing up their betrothal. Shallan reassures him, and they decide to work together to investigate the murder, starting with the notebook Adolin brought. Throughout the chapter, Shallan's thoughts also touch on her troubled past and her struggles to come to terms with her actions, but she finds comfort in Adolin's presence and their budding relationship.

14. Squires Can’t Capture

Kaladin infiltrates a Voidbringer camp, expecting to find monstrous creatures, but instead discovers them playing cards and acting like ordinary people. They speak without accents, use simple language, and display no signs of the fearsome warriors he anticipated. The Voidbringers are gathered under tarps, trying to stay dry in the rain, and are eating soggy grain, giving Kaladin a glimpse into their mundane lives. As he observes, Kaladin begins to question his understanding of the Voidbringers and their nature. His presence is eventually discovered, and the Voidbringers, armed with crude cudgels, prepare to defend themselves. However, Kaladin hesitates, realizing they are not warriors, and instead decides to surrender, holding up his hands in a peaceful gesture.

15. Brightness Radiant

Shallan and Adolin investigate the murders in Urithiru, discussing the possibility of one or two killers. Adolin suggests teaching Shallan how to use her Shardblade, and she agrees, but only after transforming into her alternate persona, Radiant. As Radiant, she is more poised and confident, and Adolin begins to teach her the basics of sword fighting. Throughout their training, Shallan struggles to reconcile her past and her feelings about wielding a sword, but as Radiant, she is able to push aside her emotions and focus on the task at hand. As the night wears on, Shallan finds herself enjoying Adolin's company and passion for sword fighting, and she begins to feel a sense of intimacy and connection with him. Despite the challenges and dangers facing them, Shallan is able to find a sense of peace and contentment in the moment, and she eventually falls asleep, feeling more at ease than she has in a long time.

16. Wrapped Three Times

Dalinar reflects on the Blade of the Assassin in White, also known as the Honorblade, which he has obtained. The Stormfather explains the nature of the Blade, stating that it was forged from Honor's soul and does not have a gemstone, making it unique from other Shardblades. Dalinar decides to hide the Blade in a secure location, unsure of how to use it or its true potential. He then engages in a wrestling match with Aratin Khal, during which he struggles to come to terms with his age and declining physical abilities. Meanwhile, Navani reads out a message from the Iriali queen, who is considering allying with the Voidbringers and rejects Dalinar's pleas for unity. The conversation with the queen reveals her pagan beliefs and her willingness to let nations fall to the Voidbringers. Dalinar's discussion with Kadash, an ardent, becomes heated as they debate the existence of the Almighty and the role of tradition in their society. Dalinar ultimately uses his Stormlight to demonstrate his connection to the divine, leaving Kadash stuck to the ground. The chapter ends with Dalinar remembering his wife's name, Evi, and her face, after Navani mentions it in conversation.

17. Trapped in Shadows

Kaladin, still a captive of the parshmen, engages in a conversation with his captor and the group's children, learning more about their situation and the effects of the Everstorm on their minds and souls. He realizes that the parshmen are not the monstrous creatures he was taught to believe, but rather ordinary people who have been enslaved and brutalized by humans. Kaladin's captor shares his personal story of pain and loss, and Kaladin begins to understand the depth of their suffering. As the group prepares to make camp, Kaladin uses his knowledge of survival skills to help them, teaching them how to start a fire with wet wood and preserve their food. The parshmen are initially wary but eventually come to trust Kaladin, and he earns their respect by proving himself useful. Meanwhile, Syl, Kaladin's spren, observes that the parshmen may be able to see her, and she suspects that a Voidspren is guiding the group. As the night wears on, Kaladin continues to help the parshmen, and they begin to see him in a different light, as a potential ally rather than an enemy.

18. Double Vision

Shallan, disguised as Veil, navigates the Breakaway market in Urithiru, seeking information about a murder. She visits two taverns, adopting her Veil persona to gather information and fit in with the crowd. At the second tavern, All's Alley, she encounters a group of thugs and uses her Ghostblood symbol to intimidate them into talking. They reveal that a man named Ned was responsible for a murder, but the details don't match the murder Veil is investigating. However, the group mentions that Ned was also suspected of killing a barmaid in a similar manner, and Veil becomes intrigued by the possibility of a connection between the two murders. As she leaves the tavern, Veil is left with more questions and a sense of unease, wondering what the true story is behind the murders and how they might be linked.

19. The Subtle Art of Diplomacy

The chapter takes place thirty-one years ago and revolves around Dalinar Kholin attending a feast with his brother Gavilar, where they are hosting foreign guests, including a Westerner named Toh and his sister. The atmosphere is tense, with Dalinar feeling out of place and restless, eventually leaving the table to take a stroll in the highstorm outside. Upon his return, he discovers an assassin attempting to kill Gavilar and swiftly intervenes, saving his brother's life. The assassin's presence and the subsequent discussion reveal the growing desperation and hostility of their enemies, who are resorting to underhanded tactics. The chapter also touches on Dalinar's personal life, including his admiration for Navani, who is already married to Gavilar, and his potential marriage to Toh's sister, Evi, as part of a political arrangement to secure alliances and unify the kingdom.

20. Cords to Bind

Kaladin is helping a group of parshmen, who have gained their freedom and are trying to survive in the wilderness. He teaches them how to treat wounds, make tools, and prepare for the dangers of the highstorm. However, tensions arise as Sah, one of the parshmen, expresses his resentment towards Kaladin's authoritative nature and the fact that they need his help to survive. Sah argues that their freedom is an illusion, and that they will always be bound by the societal expectations and traditions of the humans who once enslaved them. Kaladin is torn between his duty to protect the parshmen and his awareness that their newfound freedom will likely lead to conflict with the humans who will try to enslave them again. As he struggles with these conflicting loyalties, Syl, his spren, warns him of an approaching highstorm, and Kaladin must decide how to protect the parshmen from the impending danger.

21. Set Up to Fail

Shallan wakes up to Adolin's knocking, feeling hungover from a night of drinking Horneater white while investigating a murder as Veil. Adolin brings her water and news that his father, Dalinar, has arranged a meeting with Ialai Sadeas, the widow of Highprince Sadeas, to discuss her husband's murder. Shallan agrees to accompany Adolin to the meeting, and they set out with Gaz and Vathah, two of Shallan's guards. Along the way, Adolin discusses the importance of having guards as a symbol of prestige and Shallan's role as their commander. They arrive at the Sadeas section of Urithiru, where the atmosphere is tense and the soldiers seem hostile towards Adolin. Inside, they meet Ialai Sadeas, who is surrounded by her guards and seems calculating. Shallan also notices Mraize, a leader of the Ghostbloods, standing beside Ialai, which raises her suspicions.

22. The Darkness Within

The chapter begins with Shallan and Adolin visiting Ialai Sadeas, the widow of Highprince Sadeas, to discuss the murder of her husband. They are accompanied by Mraize, a leader of the Ghostbloods, who is acting as one of Ialai's soldiers. Ialai implies that Dalinar's soldiers may have been involved in the murder, suggesting that they may have acted on their own to do their highprince a service. Adolin and Shallan leave the meeting, discussing the possibility of multiple killers and the involvement of Amaram, a highmarshal who has a history with Kaladin and Shallan's family. As they walk away, they receive news that the highstorms have returned, with a Stormwall spotted in New Natanan. Meanwhile, Shallan has a private conversation with Mraize, who reveals that he knows about her past and her connection to the Ghostbloods. He tasks her with securing Urithiru and hunting down the source of darkness within the city, offering her information about her deceased brother Helaran in exchange for her cooperation.

23. Storming Strange

Kaladin leads a group of parshmen to a storm bunker, where they plan to wait out an impending highstorm. The group's numbers have grown to nearly a hundred, and Kaladin is still trying to understand their goal and the role of the unseen Voidspren guiding them. As they settle into the bunker, Kaladin meets a new, golden-yellow spren who reveals that she is a messenger and not like other spren he has encountered. The spren asks Kaladin if he would be willing to fight for the parshmen, and he responds that he would need to be allowed to do so. The spren tells Kaladin that the final decision will not be hers to make, but rather will be determined at their destination. As the storm rages on outside, Kaladin is left to consider his options and the potential consequences of his actions, including his loyalty to the parshmen and his duty to return to Urithiru.

24. Men of Blood and Sorrow

Dalinar Kholin struggles to come to terms with his memories of his wife Evi, which have begun to resurface after a long time. He is unsure why this is happening, as the Old Magic that had taken his memories was supposed to be permanent. Navani, his wife, is determined to help him uncover the truth behind his memories and the deal he made with the Nightwatcher. Meanwhile, Dalinar meets with King Taravangian of Jah Keved, who has arrived at Urithiru in response to Dalinar's call for unity against the Voidbringers. However, it becomes clear that Taravangian is not the same man he once was, having suffered an apoplexy that has affected his mental capacities. Despite this, Dalinar is grateful for Taravangian's presence and his willingness to listen, as the other monarchs of Roshar have refused to heed Dalinar's warning call. The group discusses the lack of response from other nations, including the Tukari, who have sent a threatening message from their god-king. Dalinar reaffirms his commitment to uniting Roshar through diplomacy, rather than conquest, but struggles with the temptation to use force to achieve his goals.

25. The Girl Who Looked Up

Shallan explores the depths of Urithiru, defying Dalinar's orders to travel in pairs, and discovers a hidden theater where she recreates a story from her childhood using her Lightweaving abilities. The story, "The Girl Who Looked Up," is about a young girl who climbs a massive wall to discover the truth about her world. As Shallan finishes the story, she notices a shadowy figure in the audience, which prompts her to give chase. She transforms into Radiant and pursues the figure, eventually losing it in the corridors. Later, she tracks the figure to the Breakaway market, where she finds a Horneater man, Rock, who has been stabbed in the hand by an unknown attacker. Shallan realizes that the attacker may have mistaken Rock for someone else and that the stabbing may be connected to her own actions as Veil. She encounters a woman named Ishnah, who claims to be a skilled writer and offers to join Shallan's group, but Shallan declines, warning Ishnah to stay away from the Ghostbloods.

26. Blackthorn Unleashed

The chapter delves into Dalinar's past, twenty-nine years ago, where he is preparing for a battle against Highprince Kalanor. Dalinar's betrothed, Evi, performs a ritual to invoke the protection of her people's god, the One. Dalinar is dismissive of her beliefs but agrees to a prayer, seeking strength and self-control. As the battle commences, Dalinar leads the charge, using his Shardplate and Shardblade to devastating effect, killing hundreds of enemy soldiers. He eventually faces off against Kalanor, and after a fierce duel, he emerges victorious, killing the highprince. However, as Dalinar stands over Kalanor's body, he feels empty and unfulfilled, despite his victory. He begins to experience the Thrill, a euphoric and violent state, and considers attacking his own brother, Gavilar, who has come to congratulate him on his victory. Dalinar manages to restrain himself, feeling a deep sense of shame and horror at his own actions. He gives the captured Shardblade and Plate to Gavilar, urging him to keep them, and vows to never again let his passions and the Thrill control him.

27. Playing Pretend

Shallan attends a meeting where Dalinar discusses his plan to unite the nations of Roshar against the Voidbringers, but the conversation is tense and fraught with disagreements among the highprinces. Meanwhile, Shallan observes and sketches the attendees, including a mysterious woman named Malata who is a Surgebinder and seems to be hiding secrets. After the meeting, Shallan follows Adolin, who is upset by the appointment of Highmarshal Amaram as the new Highprince of House Sadeas. Shallan reveals to Adolin that she believes Amaram killed her brother, and Adolin shares his own history with Amaram, who had betrayed and killed Kaladin's squad. As Shallan navigates the tower, she discovers some disturbing and unexplained sketches in her notebook, which seem to be connected to the dark forces at work in Urithiru. She decides to take action and recruits a group of soldiers, including Vathah and his team, to help her investigate the strange occurrences in the tower.

28. Another Option

Dalinar Kholin receives a rejection from the Prime of Azir, refusing to open their Oathgate, citing the danger it poses to their city. Dalinar then attempts to negotiate with Queen Fen of Thaylenah, but she also declines, stating that allowing an Alethi army into her city would be foolish. Meanwhile, a Shardblade, Oathbringer, is discovered, which Dalinar recognizes as his own, won at the Rift years ago. He returns it to Ialai Sadeas, but not before Amaram accuses him of being a hypocrite, criticizing his moral code. Dalinar later discusses morality and justice with King Taravangian, who shares his thoughts on the burden of making difficult decisions as a leader. The conversation leads Dalinar to realize that the Stormfather can show his visions to others, potentially solving his problem of uniting the monarchs against the Voidbringers. He plans to use this ability to meet with Queen Fen and other leaders in person, hoping to persuade them to join his coalition.

29. No Backing Down

Shallan, in her persona as Veil, is on the hunt for a mysterious entity that has been committing murders in the Breakaway market of Urithiru. She tracks the entity, which is revealed to be a spren unlike any she has seen before, to a hidden room deep in the tower. Adolin and Bridge Four join her, and they soon discover that the room leads to a much larger, ancient structure filled with murals and artifacts. However, they are confronted by an even greater threat: the Midnight Mother, one of the Unmade, who is capable of creating dark, twisted duplicates of people. Shallan uses her Lightweaving abilities to create illusions of herself and others, which seems to unsettle the Midnight Mother and her creations. As the battle rages on, Shallan, Adolin, and Renarin fight to reach the center of the room, where a massive, pulsing mass of darkness is wrapped around a pillar. Shallan eventually reaches the mass and, with a sense of determination and trepidation, presses her safehand against it, potentially unlocking a new level of understanding or connection with the entity.

30. Mother of Lies

Shallan, still reeling from her encounter with the Midnight Mother, Re-Shephir, finds herself open to the spren's influence, and their bond allows her to understand the creature's motivations and fears. Re-Shephir, created as a splinter of a more terrible being, was designed to sow chaos and destruction, but over time, it developed a fascination with humanity. Shallan, drawing upon her own experiences and emotions, attacks Re-Shephir with a ferocity that surprises even herself. However, as she delves deeper into the spren's essence, she realizes that Re-Shephir fears being trapped again, a fate it had suffered at the hands of a Lightweaver like Shallan. Shallan uses this knowledge to her advantage, lying to Re-Shephir about her own fears and determination, and the spren ultimately breaks, fleeing in terror. In the aftermath, Shallan and her companions survey the damage and discover a treasure trove of gemstones set into a pillar, a find that could be worth more than most kingdoms. Shallan advises against chasing Re-Shephir, opting instead to post guards and prevent its return, still reeling from the intensity of their encounter.

31. Demands of the Storm

Kaladin visits the city of Revolar, which has been conquered by a large force of parshmen. He meets with their leader, a parshwoman with red-glowing eyes, and decides to escape during a highstorm. As he flies through the storm, he's pursued by two parshmen with similar red eyes, known as the Fused. Kaladin seeks the help of the Stormfather, a powerful spren, to stop the storm from harming the humans in the city, but the Stormfather refuses, citing that it's not in his nature to stop the winds. Undeterred, Kaladin uses his Stormlight to create a windbreak, protecting a group of people from the storm's fury. After the storm passes, Kaladin is guided by Syl, his spren, to fly towards Urithiru, the tower city, where he eventually lands on the plateau in front of the city.

32. Company

Shallan is still reeling from her encounter with the Midnight Mother, Re-Shephir, and is trying to process the experience with Palona's company. She reflects on the creature's nature, realizing it's a spren that desperately wants to understand humanity, and wonders if it was once human. Meanwhile, Adolin arrives with news of a new arrival at the tower, which turns out to be Jasnah Kholin, a significant character who has finally arrived on the scene. Shallan, despite her exhaustion and lingering fear, feels a sense of stability and control in her life, having found a way to cope with her experiences and emotions. The chapter ends with the introduction of Jasnah, setting the stage for the next part of the story.

I-1. Puuli

The chapter revolves around Puuli, a lighthouse keeper, who is excited about a new storm that has been causing destruction in his town. Despite the tragedy it brings, Puuli sees it as an opportunity to collect valuable scraps of wood and other materials. As he goes about his day, helping his neighbors and collecting debris, he whispers to himself about the storm being a sign of something greater. Puuli's family has a long history of keeping the lighthouse, and his grandfather had warned him of a time of great change, when people from a hidden island called the Origin would come to reclaim the town. Puuli believes that this storm may be a harbinger of that event, and he is determined to keep the lighthouse fire burning bright, as his grandfather had instructed, in anticipation of their arrival.

She escapes to the forest to read a romance novel, "An Accountability of Virtue", and becomes fully engaged in the story. Meanwhile, Ardent Urv interrupts her and inquires about her progress on translating the Dawnchant, an ancient written language. Ellista shares her findings, which suggest that the Dawnchant was once a universal written language used across Roshar, and that its decline was due to it being replaced by phonetic transcriptions of other languages. Urv is impressed by her work and offers to lend her the sequel to the novel she was reading in exchange for her help with a stubborn section of Dawnchant translation.

Shallan is appalled by this concept, realizing that they are essentially enslaving spren to achieve their goals. Jasnah tasks Shallan with sketching a massive crystal pillar in the room, which is infused with multiple varieties of gemstones. As Shallan works, Jasnah reveals that she survived her apparent death by using her Elsecaller abilities to shift to Shadesmar and later return to the physical realm. The two discuss their plans and Shallan's experiences, including her encounters with the Ghostbloods and the Unmade. However, as they talk, Dalinar shows her his passion and conviction, and Fen begins to consider his words. The Stormfather slows down time, allowing Dalinar and Fen to have a conversation without interruption. Dalinar explains that he wants to unite the world against the Voidbringers and that the visions are a gift from the Almighty to help them prepare.
