Chapter Summary of The Way of Kings

Prologue: To Kill

The story begins with a quote about the fleeting nature of human love and the impending arrival of the Everstorm. Szeth-son-son-Vallano, a Shin man known as the Truthless, is tasked with assassinating a king on the day of a treaty signing between the Alethi and Parshendi. Szeth wears white, a Parshendi tradition, to signify his intentions and make his presence known. As he navigates the palace, he uses his unique abilities, known as Lashings, which allow him to manipulate gravity and move with supernatural speed and agility. Szeth faces opposition from guards and eventually encounters a Shardbearer, a warrior in powerful magical armor, who is revealed to be the king himself. The two engage in a intense battle, with Szeth using his Lashings and Shardblade to gain the upper hand. Ultimately, Szeth kills the king by causing the balcony to collapse, and then takes a mysterious sphere from the king's pocket. Before escaping, Szeth honors the king's dying request to deliver a message to his brother, writing it in the king's own blood on a piece of wood.

1: STORMBLESSED

The story takes place five years after the events of the prologue, and follows a young darkeyed soldier named Cenn as he prepares for his first battle. Cenn is part of a squad led by Kaladin Stormblessed, a skilled and experienced warrior who has a reputation for being lucky. As the battle begins, Cenn's squad holds their ground against the enemy, using tactics and formations to defend themselves. However, when Cenn is separated from his squad and wounded, Kaladin comes to his rescue, taking down multiple enemy soldiers and saving Cenn's life. After the battle, Kaladin's squad tends to Cenn's wounds and prepares to retreat, but not before Kaladin takes down a brightlord, a high-ranking lighteyed officer. As Cenn lies wounded, he reflects on the events of the battle and the skills of his squadleader, Kaladin. The chapter ends with the arrival of a Shardbearer, a warrior in powerful magical armor, who is likely to change the course of the battle.

2: HONOR IS DEAD

Kaladin, a former soldier, is now a slave being transported through the Unclaimed Hills. He is haunted by his past failures and struggles to find the will to keep going. Despite his reservations, he tries to help a fellow slave who is sick with the grinding coughs, a disease that can be treated with proper care. However, the slave is brutally killed by one of the slaver's mercenaries, prompting Kaladin's anger and frustration. As he navigates his desperate situation, Kaladin is also being watched by a mysterious windspren who seems to be able to understand and communicate with him in ways that other spren cannot. The windspren's strange behavior and Kaladin's own dark past threaten to push him further into despair, but he still holds on to a spark of hope and defiance.

3: CITY OF BELLS

Shallan arrives in the city of Kharbranth, a place she never thought she'd visit, after months of traveling by ship. She's on a mission to find Jasnah Kholin, a renowned and infamous heretic, to become her ward and gain the education and connections she needs to save her family's house from financial ruin. As she explores the city, she's struck by its vibrant culture, colorful buildings, and ringing bells. With the help of a sailor named Yalb, she makes her way to the Conclave, a grand building where Jasnah is likely to be found. Shallan is nervous about meeting Jasnah, who is known for her intelligence and heretic views, but she's determined to succeed in her mission and secure a better future for herself and her family.

4: THE SHATTERED PLAINS

Kaladin, a slave, continues his journey with Tvlakv, a slaver, and his mercenaries, Bluth and Tag. As they travel through the Unclaimed Hills, Kaladin's wagon is caught in a highstorm, and he reflects on his past experiences with such storms. After the storm passes, the wagons continue on, and Kaladin notices that they are approaching a massive army encampment, which he soon realizes is the king's army on the Shattered Plains. The slaves in the wagon become excited, hoping to find justice and better treatment under the king's rule. However, Kaladin is skeptical, having experienced the corruption of lighteyes in the past. Despite this, he can't help but feel a spark of hope, wondering if he might find a chance to fight again and redeem himself. As the wagon draws closer to the encampment, Kaladin sees the vast expanse of the Shattered Plains, a landscape of broken rock formations and deep chasms, and he feels a sense of irony that he has finally arrived at a place he once longed to be, but now as a slave.

5: HERETIC

Shallan meets Jasnah Kholin, a renowned heretic and scholar, in the city of Kharbranth. Jasnah is not what Shallan expected, being beautiful and statuesque, and Shallan is intimidated by her intelligence and reserved nature. Jasnah puts Shallan through a rigorous evaluation, testing her knowledge in various subjects, including music, languages, writing, logic, and science. Shallan struggles to meet Jasnah's expectations, but shows glimpses of potential, particularly in her ability to think critically and respond elegantly. Despite this, Jasnah ultimately rejects Shallan as her ward, citing her lack of knowledge in key areas. However, Shallan is determined to learn from Jasnah and decides to follow her, even if it means taking drastic measures. The chapter also reveals that Shallan's true intention is to steal Jasnah's powerful Soulcaster, a valuable fabrial that can transform substances.

6: BRIDGE FOUR

Kaladin, a former soldier, is sold to the army of Highprince Sadeas as a slave and assigned to Bridge Four, a group of men tasked with carrying bridges across chasms on the Shattered Plains. The bridgemen are poorly treated and forced to undertake a grueling and deadly mission, carrying their bridge into the face of enemy archers. Despite the heavy casualties, the army manages to cross the chasm and engage the enemy. Kaladin is shocked and horrified by the brutality of the battle and the treatment of the bridgemen. He meets a windspren, a magical being, who helps him and seems to be able to communicate with him. As the day comes to a close, Kaladin is forced to carry the bridge back to camp, exhausted and wounded, but determined to survive. He reflects on the horrors he has witnessed and the torment he has endured, and realizes that he has been pushed to his limits. The chapter ends with Kaladin's windspren, Sylphrena, introducing herself and Kaladin struggling to come to terms with his new reality as a member of Bridge Four.

7: ANYTHING REASONABLE

Shallan attempts to convince Jasnah Kholin to take her on as a ward, despite being previously rejected. Shallan waits for Jasnah in a reading alcove, where she spends her time drawing and writing a letter to Jasnah, appealing to her rational nature and explaining her limited education. Meanwhile, she meets Brother Kabsal, a charming and unorthodox ardent who is also waiting to speak with Jasnah. The two engage in a pleasant conversation, during which Shallan learns that Brother Kabsal is trying to persuade Jasnah to reconsider her atheistic views. As Jasnah arrives, Shallan leaves the letter and her drawings, hoping to impress Jasnah and change her mind about taking her on as a ward.

8: NEARER THE FLAME

Shallan's meeting with Jasnah Kholin ends in rejection, but she refuses to give up. She decides to take a risk and try to persuade Jasnah again, this time by showing her determination and persistence. Shallan purchases a set of books on history and philosophy, intending to study them intensely and prove herself to Jasnah. She returns to the Conclave and begins to study, using all her remaining spheres to light her alcove. Jasnah discovers her and is impressed by Shallan's determination and the quality of the books she has chosen. Jasnah decides to take Shallan on as her ward, not just because of her family's situation, but also because she sees potential in Shallan as a scholar. Shallan is overjoyed and begins her new life as Jasnah's ward, ready to start her education and prove herself.

9: DAMNATION

Kaladin, a former soldier, is struggling to come to terms with his new reality as a member of Bridge Four, a group of bridgemen with an extremely high casualty rate. He is haunted by his past failures and the constant death surrounding him, and has become numb to the world. His only solace is Syl, a windspren who has been watching over him, but even she decides to leave him, unable to bear witness to his suffering. Kaladin is forced to confront the harsh realities of his situation, including the fact that bridgemen are treated as disposable and that the lighteyes in charge seem to care little for their lives. The chapter ends with Kaladin breaking down in tears, overwhelmed by the trauma and despair that has been building up inside him.

10: STORIES OF SURGEONS

The story flashes back to Kaladin's childhood, nine years ago, where he is training to be a surgeon under his father, Lirin. Kaladin assists his father in treating a young woman named Sani, who has a badly mangled hand. As they work to repair the damage, Kaladin's father teaches him about the importance of cleanliness and the properties of various medicines. The conversation turns to Kaladin's desire to become a soldier, which his father strongly discourages, believing that surgeons who save lives are more valuable than soldiers who take them. Despite this, Kaladin is drawn to the idea of honor and glory associated with being a soldier. His father, however, sees a different path for Kaladin, one that involves training with renowned surgeons in Kharbranth and using his gifts to help others. The chapter explores the complexities of Kaladin's relationships with his family and his own sense of purpose, as well as the societal expectations and values of his community.

11: DROPLETS

Kaladin, a former soldier and current slave, stands at the edge of the Honor Chasm, contemplating his own death and the futility of his life. However, the arrival of Syl, a windspren who has been watching over him, changes his mindset. She brings him a leaf of blackbane, a deadly poison, which Kaladin interprets as a symbol of her concern for him. Syl's words and actions inspire Kaladin to re-evaluate his situation and consider taking action to protect the bridgemen in his crew. He decides to take charge and become the new bridgeleader, and he confronts Gaz, the sergeant in charge of the bridgemen, to assert his authority. Kaladin demands to be recognized as the new leader and to receive his wages, which he plans to use to bribe Gaz into leaving him alone. As he returns to the bridgemen's barrack, Kaladin feels a sense of determination and responsibility, and he begins to learn the names of the men in his crew, taking the first steps towards forming a bond with them and finding a way to protect them from the dangers they face.

Ishikk has been hired to gather information about Hoid's whereabouts, but so far, he has found nothing. The foreigners are frustrated with the lack of progress and argue among themselves about the best course of action. Ishikk listens to their conversation, but his mind is focused on his own life and the comforts of the Purelake. He is hesitant to settle down and marry Maib, a woman who has been pursuing him, as he values his freedom and the simplicity of his life as a fisherman. As the meeting concludes, Ishikk returns to his daily routine, checking his traps and enjoying the peacefulness of the Purelake, while the foreigners continue their search for Hoid.

He finds solace in killing small animals, a habit he keeps hidden from others. As he spends time with his axehound, Scrak, he reflects on his decision to let his sister, Shallan, pursue their plan to steal a valuable Soulcaster from Jasnah Kholin, a renowned scholar. Balat feels like a coward for not being able to participate in the plan himself and is worried about Shallan's ability to succeed. He is interrupted by his brother, Wikim, who arrives with news of a significant problem that requires Balat's attention.

1-3: THE GLORY OF IGNORANCE

Szeth-son-son-Vallano, the Truthless of Shinovar, is now a slave to a man named Took, who has been using him to impress others with his obedience. Szeth is forced to perform degrading tasks, such as cutting his own arm, to demonstrate his subservience. Took's stories about how he acquired Szeth are fabrications, and Szeth's true past as a Shardbearer and Surgebinder remains hidden. When Took is murdered by a group of footpads, Szeth is taken by them and discovers that they have found his Oathstone, a powerful artifact that binds him to obey its possessor. The footpads realize the value of having a Shin servant who will obey their every command, and Szeth is forced to acknowledge that he will do anything they say, except take his own life. The chapter ends with the footpads contemplating the possibilities of having such a powerful and obedient slave.

12: UNITY

Meanwhile, Adolin is dealing with his own personal issues, including a recent falling out with a woman he was courting. As the hunt begins, a chasmfiend emerges from the chasm, but not on the planned hunting plateau. Instead, it appears on the viewing plateau, where the king, Dalinar, and many unarmed guests are located, setting the stage for a potentially disastrous and deadly confrontation.

13: TEN HEARTBEATS

The chapter describes a intense battle between the Alethi army and a massive chasmfiend on the Shattered Plains. The creature emerges unexpectedly, causing chaos and destruction, and the army scrambles to respond. Dalinar, Adolin, and Elhokar, all Shardbearers, take the lead in fighting the beast, with Dalinar using his Shardblade, Oathbringer, to devastating effect. Despite being outnumbered and outmatched, the three warriors manage to weaken the creature, with Dalinar making a series of daring and skilled attacks. When the king is put in danger, Dalinar's determination and skill allow him to catch a massive claw and hold it back, giving Elhokar the opportunity to deliver the final blow. The creature is eventually killed, and Elhokar retrieves its valuable gemheart, a massive emerald. The chapter showcases the bravery, skill, and bond between the Kholin family members, particularly Dalinar and Adolin, as they work together to protect the king and defeat the monstrous chasmfiend.

14: PAYDAY

Kaladin, determined to fight again and protect his fellow bridgemen, takes charge of Bridge Four and tries to impose discipline and training on the group. Despite initial resistance and skepticism from the men, Kaladin perseveres, using his own strength and endurance to demonstrate his commitment. He also navigates the complexities of his relationship with Gaz, the bridge sergeant, and finds ways to assert his authority without resorting to violence. Meanwhile, Syl, the windspren, continues to evolve and learn, gaining an understanding of concepts like death and lying, and forming a deeper bond with Kaladin. As Kaladin works to build his strength and prepare for the challenges ahead, he must also confront his own demons and the harsh realities of his situation as a bridgeman.

15: THE DECOY

The chapter follows Adolin as he oversees the cleanup after the chasmfiend attack, four hours after the event. He reports to his father, Dalinar, and the king, Elhokar, about the casualties and the damage. The king is concerned about the number of deaths and wounded, but Adolin's father is more concerned about the king's safety and the potential for Parshendi attacks. Meanwhile, Sadeas, another highprince, is present and exchanges tense words with Dalinar, revealing their complicated and rivalrous relationship. Adolin is tasked by his father to investigate a broken saddle strap, which the king believes was intentionally cut, potentially as an assassination attempt. As Adolin looks into the matter, he discusses it with his father, who reveals that he has been searching for answers about his brother's, Gavilar's, final words and actions before his death. Gavilar had written a message in his own blood, which Dalinar has been trying to understand, and he shares this with Adolin. The chapter also explores the politics and alliances between the highprinces, including Sadeas and Vamah, as they navigate their relationships and interests in the war against the Parshendi.

16: COCOONS

The chapter takes place seven and a half years ago and follows a young Kaladin as he navigates his life in the town of Hearthstone. Kaladin's father, Lirin, wants him to become a surgeon, but Kaladin is unsure if that's the path he wants to take. He spends time with his friends, including Laral, the daughter of the citylord, and his younger brother Tien. Kaladin gets into a fight with a boy named Jost, who is trained in combat by his father, and despite being beaten, Kaladin asks Jost to teach him how to fight. However, Jost refuses, telling Kaladin to be what he is and not try to be something else. The chapter ends with Kaladin learning that the citylord, Brightlord Wistiow, has died, and his father reveals that Wistiow had left a fortune in diamond spheres for Kaladin to use to become a master surgeon in Kharbranth. Kaladin feels his fate has been sealed, but he's still unsure of what he wants to do with his life, except for the brief moment of clarity he felt when holding the quarterstaff during his fight with Jost.

17: A BLOODY, RED SUNSET

Kaladin visits an apothecary to purchase medical supplies, including bandages and antiseptic, to help his fellow bridgemen. The apothecary is surprised by Kaladin's knowledge of surgery and medicine, which he learned from his father. Kaladin spends a significant amount of money on the supplies, using up most of his pay. Later, during a bridge run, Kaladin's crew is attacked by Parshendi archers, and several bridgemen are wounded or killed. Kaladin takes charge and uses his medical knowledge to treat the wounded, including cauterizing wounds and setting broken bones. Despite the danger and difficulty, Kaladin is determined to save as many of his men as possible. After the battle, Kaladin confronts Gaz, the bridge sergeant, and bribes him to allow the wounded bridgemen to be taken back to camp, rather than being left behind. Kaladin's actions demonstrate his growing leadership and commitment to protecting his crew, and he begins to earn their respect and admiration.

18: HIGHPRINCE OF WAR

The chapter delves into the complexities of the war between the Alethi and the Parshendi, as well as the internal struggles of the Alethi highprinces. Adolin Kholin investigates a potentially cut saddle strap, which could be an assassination attempt on the king, and discusses his findings with leatherworkers. Meanwhile, his father, Dalinar, meets with the king to discuss the war effort and the highprinces' lack of unity. Dalinar proposes the idea of a Highprince of War to unite the highprinces, but the king is skeptical. The chapter also explores Dalinar's visions and his growing concern about the war, as well as his relationship with his son, Renarin. As a highstorm approaches, Dalinar and Renarin seek shelter, and Dalinar's visions and episodes are hinted at, causing concern among those around him. The chapter ends with the storm hitting, setting the stage for a potentially dramatic and intense sequence of events.

19: STARFALLS

Dalinar experiences another vision, this time finding himself in a rural village during a Desolation, where he must fight against dark, unnatural creatures known as Midnight Essence. He is aided by two Shardbearers, a man and a woman, who possess powerful magical armor and blades. The woman heals Dalinar's wounds and they work together to protect the villagers. The male Shardbearer invites Dalinar to join them in Urithiru, a place where the Knights Radiant are centered, and tells him that a Desolation is coming. As the vision fades, Dalinar is left with more questions than answers, but is given a cryptic message to trust Highprince Sadeas and to act with honor. He awakens in the barrack at the Shattered Plains, where his son Renarin and other soldiers are trying to calm him down. Dalinar is left to ponder the meaning of his visions and how to unite the highprinces against the coming Desolation.

20: SCARLET

The chapter flashes back to seven years ago, when Kaladin was 13 years old. He attempts to save a five-year-old girl named Miasal who has fallen and suffered a severe injury. Despite his best efforts, using his medical training to stop the bleeding and cauterize the wound, the girl dies from her injuries. Kaladin is overcome with grief and feelings of failure, but his father Lirin comforts him, telling him that he did everything he could and that it's a hard lesson to learn when to care and when to let go. The experience leaves a lasting impact on Kaladin, who begins to question his desire to become a surgeon.

21: WHY MEN LIE

Kaladin, still recovering from his injuries, forces himself to get up and start his day, determined to help his fellow bridgemen. He checks on the wounded, including Leyten, Hobber, and Dabbid, and realizes that they need antiseptic to prevent infection. However, Highprince Sadeas has refused to provide food or pay for the wounded, leaving Kaladin to find alternative ways to care for them. Kaladin decides to practice with a plank to build his strength and endurance, and Syl, the windspren, joins him, curious about human behavior and motivations. As they practice, Kaladin explains to Syl why men lie and how it's a common aspect of human nature. Meanwhile, Gaz informs Kaladin that Brightlord Lamaril wants to punish him for saving the wounded, but Sadeas has intervened, refusing to let Lamaril hang Kaladin. Instead, Sadeas orders that the wounded be refused food and pay, effectively sentencing them to a slow death. Kaladin realizes that he needs to find a way to get medicine and food for the wounded and comes up with a plan to gather a specific type of plant, a reed that grows outside the camp, which can be used to make a makeshift antiseptic. He convinces Rock, a Horneater bridgeman, to help him, and together they enlist the help of Teft, a grizzled bridgeman. The three of them form a tentative alliance, with Kaladin as their leader, and set out to gather the reeds, hoping to save the wounded and defy Sadeas's cruel orders.

22: EYES, HANDS, OR SPHERES?

The chapter takes place at a grand feast hosted by King Elhokar, where Dalinar, Adolin, and other highprinces have gathered. Dalinar is struggling to come to terms with the rumors circulating about him, which claim he is a coward and wants to abandon the Vengeance Pact. Adolin is determined to defend his father's honor and suggests dueling those who make such claims, but Dalinar refuses, citing the Codes and his desire to avoid dividing the highprinces further. Meanwhile, Navani, the king's mother, returns to the Shattered Plains and reveals that she has three reasons for doing so: to inform Dalinar about the Vedens' progress in creating "half-shards," to protect her son the king, and to discuss certain matters with Dalinar in private. The king announces the appointment of Sadeas as Highprince of Information, tasking him with investigating the alleged attempt on his life. Dalinar is shocked and realizes that he has been outmaneuvered by Sadeas, who now has the authority to investigate and potentially manipulate information to his advantage.

23: MANY USES

Kaladin, a former soldier and current slave, is tasked with gathering knobweed, a plant with antiseptic properties, to help his fellow bridgemen who are wounded and in need of medical attention. With the help of Rock, a Horneater bridgeman, and Teft, another bridgeman, Kaladin collects the knobweed and extracts its sap, which they plan to use to treat the wounded. As they work, Rock shares his story of how he came to be a bridgeman, having been part of a Horneater delegation that came to the lowlands to challenge a Shardbearer and claim a Shardblade. Kaladin also begins to open up about his past, revealing that he killed a man and was subsequently made a slave, despite being thanked by someone important for his actions. The chapter explores the complexities of the characters' relationships and backstories, as well as the harsh realities of their situation as bridgemen in the war against the Parshendi.

24: THE GALLERY OF MAPS

Dalinar meets with Highprince Roion in the king's Gallery of Maps to discuss a potential joint plateau assault against the Parshendi. Dalinar proposes that they work together, combining their unique strengths, to increase their chances of winning gemhearts and potentially gain an advantage over their enemies. However, Roion is skeptical and hesitant, fearing that Dalinar is trying to maneuver him into a position where he can seize his lands. Despite this, Dalinar remains determined to pursue a more aggressive and cooperative strategy, believing that it is the key to achieving a decisive victory and unifying the highprinces. Meanwhile, Adolin expresses his concerns to Dalinar about Sadeas's intentions, warning that he may be planning to move against them. Dalinar, however, remains trusting of Sadeas and believes that he must allow him to investigate and exercise his authority as Highprince of Information. The conversation between Dalinar and Adolin becomes heated, with Adolin accusing his father of being irrational and overly influenced by his visions, and Dalinar insisting that he must trust himself and his instincts. The chapter ends with Adolin storming out of the gallery, feeling frustrated and concerned about his father's behavior and the future of their house.

25: THE BUTCHER

The chapter takes place seven years ago and follows 13-year-old Kaladin as he navigates his life in the town of Hearthstone. Kaladin overhears two women gossiping about his father, Lirin, a surgeon, and how he allegedly stole spheres from the previous citylord, Brightlord Wistiow. Kaladin's mother, Hesina, tries to reassure him that the townspeople don't hate his father, but rather are uncomfortable with his knowledge and skills as a surgeon. The family then attends the arrival of the new citylord, Brightlord Roshone, who is curt and dismissive, blaming Lirin for his presence in Hearthstone. The chapter explores the complexities of Kaladin's relationships with his family and the townspeople, as well as his own desires and uncertainties about his future as a surgeon or a soldier.

26: STILLNESS

The chapter begins with Dalinar, a highprince, listening to a reading from "The Way of Kings" in his sitting room. He is struggling with his own doubts and fears, particularly regarding his visions and his relationship with his son Adolin. As he prepares for a plateau run, a battle to capture a strategic location, he is joined by his officers and Sadeas, another highprince who is investigating a potential assassination attempt on the king. Dalinar is wary of Sadeas's intentions and feels that he is being manipulated. During the battle, Dalinar and Adolin fight alongside each other, using their Shardblades to devastating effect. However, Dalinar is momentarily overcome with a sense of revulsion and horror at the carnage around him, which causes him to falter. Despite this, they emerge victorious, capturing the gemheart and defeating the Parshendi. After the battle, Dalinar is left feeling exhausted and troubled, unsure of what is happening to him and why he is experiencing these strange feelings. He notices a group of Parshendi on a nearby plateau, including a Shardbearer who seems to be watching him, and wonders what their intentions are.

27: CHASM DUTY

Kaladin and his crew, Bridge Four, are assigned to chasm duty, a task most bridgemen despise. They are sent to scavenge for valuable items in the chasms, including spheres, armor, and weapons. As they work, Kaladin uses his skills to protect and lead his crew, and they begin to bond over their shared experiences. Kaladin also discovers that the Parshendi, their enemies, have the ability to grow their own armor, which is a surprising and intriguing fact. Meanwhile, Kaladin's past as a soldier and his skills with a spear are revealed, and he begins to form connections with his crew members, including Rock, Teft, and Dunny. As the day comes to a close, Kaladin uses his secret weapon - Rock's cooking - to bring the crew together and boost their morale. Despite the dangers and difficulties of their situation, Kaladin is determined to protect his crew and help them survive.

Dalinar Kholin, a highprince, is struggling with his own doubts and fears, particularly regarding his visions and his relationship with his son Adolin. He is trying to decide whether to step down as highprince and let Adolin take his place. Meanwhile, he is also dealing with the politics of the war against the Parshendi and the other highprinces' refusal to work with him. Dalinar meets with his niece, Jasnah, through a spanreed, a device that allows for long-distance communication, and she shares with him her research on the ancient Voidbringers and their possible connection to the Parshendi. Dalinar is concerned about the kingdom's future and the potential consequences of his own actions, and he eventually decides to abdicate in favor of Adolin. He plans to announce his decision soon and return to his lands in Alethkar.

1-4: RYSN

Rysn, a young Thaylen merchant's apprentice, accompanies her master Vstim on a trade mission to Shinovar, a unique and isolated region where the native Shin people have a distinct culture and way of life. Upon arrival, Rysn is struck by the peculiarities of the Shin landscape, including the strange, unmoving grass and the absence of spren. Vstim and the Shin farmer, Thresh, engage in a trade negotiation, exchanging scrap metal for chickens and other goods, with both parties taking pains to emphasize the worthlessness of their offerings. Rysn observes that the Shin people place a high value on humility and honesty, and that they haggle in a unique way, by downplaying the value of their goods. After the successful trade, Vstim tasks Rysn with collecting a sample of the local grass and soil, with the intention of teaching her to care for it and understand the Shin perspective.

Axies the Collector, an Aimian man, wakes up in an alleyway in the city of Kasitor with a headache and no memory of how he got there. He discovers that he is naked and has been robbed, but his body seems to be functioning properly. As he tries to gather his bearings, he meets a beggar who claims that Axies destroyed a temple and owes him rent. Axies doesn't remember the incident, but he pays the beggar and wraps himself in a blanket to avoid indecency charges. He then makes his way through the city, drawing stares due to his blue nails and eyes, as well as his unusual shadow. Axies is a spren researcher and is in Kasitor to study a unique spren known as Cusicesh, the Protector. He observes the spren's daily appearance in the bay, taking notes on its shape, size, and behavior. After the observation, he is arrested by the city guards for public indecency, but he is not concerned, seeing it as an opportunity to search for captivityspren, a type of spren that he has been trying to find for years.

A mysterious figure emerges from the shadows, revealing that they have been watching Szeth and are dissatisfied with the way he has been used by Makkek. The figure reveals that they have killed Makkek and now possess Szeth's Oathstone, which gives them control over him. Szeth is given a list of targets to assassinate, including several high-ranking officials and monarchs, and is instructed to use his skills to create chaos and destruction. The figure disappears, leaving Szeth to contemplate the horrors that he is about to unleash upon the world.
