Chapter Summary of Words of Radiance

Prologue: To Question

The story takes place six years ago, where Jasnah Kholin, the king's daughter, is attending a feast to celebrate a treaty with the Parshendi. However, she has an ulterior motive, as she has scheduled a secret meeting with an assassin, Liss, to discuss a potential target. As Jasnah navigates the crowded feast hall, she experiences strange and unexplained phenomena, including misbehaving shadows and a brief, unsettling vision of a dark, prismatic figure. After meeting with Liss, Jasnah returns to the feast, only to find chaos and destruction. She discovers that her father, the king, has been assassinated, and the Parshendi leaders claim responsibility for the act. The story unfolds with Jasnah's shock, grief, and determination to uncover the truth behind her father's death and the mysterious events that occurred that night. As she begins to investigate, she becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding the impossible things she witnessed, and her search for answers becomes a driving force in her life.

1. Santhid

Shallan, now on a ship with her mentor Jasnah, is determined to learn more about the mysterious realm of Shadesmar, which she had previously glimpsed. She spends her time on the ship drawing and trying to understand the strange occurrences that have been happening to her. When a rare sea creature, a santhid, appears alongside the ship, Shallan sees an opportunity to study it up close and convinces the captain to stop the ship and lower her down into the water. As she observes the santhid, she is struck by its majesty and the vibrant life that surrounds it. Meanwhile, Jasnah reveals to Shallan that she has arranged for her to be betrothed to Adolin Kholin, a high-ranking officer and potential heir to the throne of Alethkar. Shallan is both thrilled and intimidated by the prospect, but Jasnah assures her that she will train her to navigate the complexities of the Alethi court. As Shallan navigates her new circumstances, she begins to realize that power and authority are not just about wealth or title, but also about perception and illusion.

2. Bridge Four

Kaladin, now a free man, emerges from his quarters to meet with his fellow bridgemen, Teft, Moash, and Skar. They discuss their new circumstances, with Dalinar Kholin having given them freedom and a new role as his bodyguards. Kaladin tasks Teft with organizing and training the other bridgemen, while he, Moash, and Skar will focus on protecting Dalinar. The group visits a market, where they notice a sense of quiet dread among the people, still reeling from the aftermath of Sadeas's betrayal. They then visit the quartermaster, Rind, to receive their new uniforms, which they eagerly don. However, they refuse to wear the insignia of the Cobalt Guard, instead opting to create their own glyphpair insignia, symbolizing their identity as Bridge Four. Meanwhile, Kaladin struggles with his own identity and the weight of his past, including the scars of his slavery and his unique abilities as a Surgebinder. He is determined to keep his abilities hidden, fearing that the lighteyes will take them away from him if they discover what he can do.

3. Pattern

Shallan continues her research on the Knights Radiant and the mysterious realm of Shadesmar, pouring over one of Jasnah's earliest published works. She becomes increasingly fascinated with a pattern that appears to her, which seems to be connected to the symbol-headed creatures she has seen before. As she draws the pattern, it begins to take on a life of its own, moving from the paper to the floor and interacting with her in a seemingly playful manner. Jasnah reveals that this pattern is a type of spren known as a Cryptic, which will grant Shallan the ability to Soulcast and potentially other powers. Jasnah tasks Shallan with studying the Cryptic and recording her experiences, which could be of great importance to their future research. Shallan is both excited and intimidated by this opportunity, and begins to delve deeper into the mysteries of the spren and their connection to the Surges, the fundamental forces of the world.

4. Taker of Secrets

Dalinar experiences a vision of the past, where he finds himself in a group of soldiers running through the shallow waters of the Purelake, accompanied by a Radiant in Shardplate. They are searching for a spren that doesn't act like it should, and soon discover a massive stone creature, a Thunderclast, emerging from the lakebed. The vision ends with the Almighty speaking to Dalinar, tasking him with refounding the Knights Radiant and preparing for an impending storm. After the vision, Dalinar awakens to find Navani beside him, who has been transcribing his words during the vision. They discuss the implications of the vision and the need to publish a proclamation to the public. Later, Dalinar discovers a mysterious message on his wall, written in glyphs, which reads "Sixty-two days, Death follows." Despite the uncertainty of the message's meaning, Dalinar is convinced that time is running out, and he instructs Navani to send out the proclamation and arrange a meeting with the highprinces.

5. Ideals

The chapter focuses on Kaladin, now a captain of Bridge Four, as he navigates the complexities of guarding Highprince Dalinar Kholin and the king. A crier reads out Dalinar's proclamation, which outlines changes to the collection and distribution of gemhearts on the Shattered Plains, sparking discontent among the highprinces. Kaladin meets with Sigzil, who wants to study Kaladin's unique abilities, and agrees to let him conduct experiments. Meanwhile, Torol Sadeas, a highprince, plots against Dalinar, seeking to destroy him and conquer Alethkar. The chapter also explores Kaladin's thoughts on his past and his duty as a soldier, as well as his interactions with Syl, a mysterious being who seems to be connected to the Stormlight. The highprinces react to Dalinar's proclamation, with some planning to resist and others considering alliances. Dalinar reveals his plan to refound the Knights Radiant, a legendary order of warriors, which sparks skepticism and concern among his allies. Kaladin is tasked with guarding Dalinar's family and eventually taking over the king's guard, merging his men with the King's Guard to create a single, unified force.

6. Terrible Destruction

Shallan continues to study the mysterious spren, Pattern, and learns more about its abilities and behavior. She also has a conversation with Jasnah, who is working on a secret project and is worried about an impending disaster. Jasnah reveals that she believes the parshmen, who are enslaved and used as servants, may be planning a revolution, and that she is searching for a way to prevent it. She also mentions that she is looking for a lost city called Urithiru, which may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of the ancient magic known as Surgebinding. Shallan agrees to help Jasnah on her quest and is given a book to read about the Lightweavers, one of the orders of the ancient Knights Radiant. As Shallan settles in to read, she is suddenly awoken by screams, shouts, and smoke, indicating that something is terribly wrong on the ship.

7. Open Flame

Shallan's world is turned upside down as she witnesses the brutal murder of her mentor, Jasnah, at the hands of a group of assassins on the ship. In a state of panic and grief, Shallan is forced to rely on her limited knowledge of Surgebinding and the guidance of the mysterious spren, Pattern. With the help of Stormlight, Shallan manages to create a distraction, allowing her to momentarily escape her pursuers. As the situation on the ship deteriorates, with the sailors being executed one by one, Shallan decides to take drastic action. She uses her Surgebinding abilities to travel to the Cognitive Realm, Shadesmar, where she communicates with the consciousness of the ship, the Wind's Pleasure. Shallan convinces the ship to transform into a different form, using the Stormlight to facilitate the change. The ship's transformation causes it to sink, plunging Shallan into the icy waters. As she struggles to survive, she finds herself being pulled deeper into the darkness by an unknown force.

However, the Parshendi's unusual tactics, including the presence of a Shardbearer who does not participate in the battle, leave Dalinar with more questions than answers. After the battle, Dalinar reflects on his inability to persuade Aladar and the other highprinces to follow his vision, and he receives a mysterious letter that may hold the key to solving his problems. The letter arrives as Dalinar is struggling to come to terms with a prophecy that seems to foretell a catastrophic event in sixty days, and he begins to suspect that he may have written the prophecy himself.

9. Walking the Grave

Kaladin leads a group of bridgemen, including Teft and Rock, into the chasms, a network of deep, narrow valleys on the Shattered Plains, to train and explore. As they navigate the treacherous terrain, they come across a multitude of debris, including broken sticks, rocks, and bodies, which serves as a stark reminder of the war's brutality. Kaladin is accompanied by Syl, a mysterious being who is bound to him, and together they discuss the nature of spren, the Stormfather, and the possibility of others like Kaladin with unique abilities. Syl encourages Kaladin to embrace his potential and become what Dalinar Kholin is searching for, a true Radiant. Meanwhile, Teft begins to train the new recruits, and Kaladin agrees to practice his abilities with Sigzil, marking a significant step towards embracing his powers and potentially becoming a leader in the refounding of the Knights Radiant.

10. Red Carpet Once White

The story flashes back six years to a traumatic event in Shallan's past, where she is found by her father in a room filled with corpses, including her mother's. Shallan's father tries to comfort her, singing a lullaby and telling her to pretend the horrific event never happened. As he carries her out of the room, Shallan sees the aftermath of the violence and is haunted by the image of her mother's lifeless body. The scene suggests that Shallan was somehow involved in the tragedy, and her father's words imply that he is trying to protect her from the consequences of her actions. The chapter ends with Shallan's father closing the door on the gruesome scene, leaving the reader to wonder what really happened and how it has shaped Shallan into the person she is today.

Shallan, still reeling from the death of her mentor Jasnah, finds herself stranded on a deserted coast after the ship they were on sank. She is rescued by a santhid, a large sea creature, and eventually makes her way to shore, where she discovers a trunk containing Jasnah's books and notes. Shallan tries to start a fire using her knowledge of Surgebinding, but is unsuccessful. She then sets out to find help, and stumbles upon a group of slavers, led by a man named Tvlakv. Despite initial reservations, Shallan decides to use her wit and authority to convince the slavers to assist her, pretending to be a high-ranking lighteyes. She orders them to take her to the Shattered Plains, and to her surprise, they comply. As they journey together, Shallan must navigate the complexities of her newfound situation, all while trying to come to terms with the loss of her mentor and the dangers that lie ahead.

Kaladin experiments with his Stormlight abilities, testing their limits and potential applications in combat. He practices with his friends, including Rock, Lopen, and Sigzil, and discovers that he can stick objects and people to walls and floors using the Stormlight. As they test his abilities, Kaladin begins to realize the potential benefits and drawbacks of his powers. Meanwhile, Teft arrives and discusses the possibility of refounding the Knights Radiant, a legendary order of warriors. Kaladin is hesitant, knowing that people may hate him for what the old Radiants did. Later, Kaladin learns that a hero has arrived on the Shattered Plains, and to his shock, it is Highlord Amaram, the man who had wronged him in the past. Kaladin's encounter with Amaram sparks a mix of emotions, including hatred and anger, and he rushes to confront him, setting the stage for a potentially explosive confrontation.

She reflects on her people's struggles and the war with the Alethi, and visits the Hall of Art where her soldiers are attempting to create art, albeit poorly. Eshonai meets with her sister, Venli, who has been researching and experimenting with new forms, including stormform, which could potentially give the Parshendi the power to control highstorms. Venli believes that with enough people in stormform, they could destroy the Alethi army and secure their freedom. Eshonai is hesitant, preferring to explore the possibility of negotiating with the Alethi, but Venli and her team are convinced that stormform is their only hope for survival. Eshonai agrees to consider their plan, weighing the risks and potential benefits of embracing this powerful and ancient form.

As Ym works on the boy's foot, he shares his philosophy with the boy, explaining that he believes all people are part of a single, unified being, and that their individual experiences are what make life worth living. However, Ym's peaceful life is disrupted by a mysterious figure in a black and silver uniform, who accuses Ym of being an accomplice to murder and seeks to punish him. The figure reveals that Ym's past mistakes have caught up with him, and he is forced to flee for his life. In an attempt to prove herself, Rysn takes a bold and reckless action, climbing down the side of the greatshell island to appeal directly to the island's god, Relu-na. The stunt nearly costs her her life, but she is saved by the island's spren and earns the respect of the Reshi people. I-4. Last Legion

Eshonai, a Shardbearer and leader of the Parshendi, discusses a potential new form, stormform, with her sister Venli and other members of the Five, a group of leaders representing different forms. The new form could grant the Parshendi the power to control highstorms and tap their energy, potentially changing the course of the war with the Alethi. However, Eshonai is hesitant and worried about the risks, as the ancient powers are tied to the gods and could invite their return. Despite her concerns, Eshonai agrees to undergo the transformation herself, citing her own expendability as a soldier and Shardbearer. The chapter explores the complexities of Parshendi society, their unique forms and abilities, and the weight of their history and traditions. Eshonai's decision sets the stage for a potentially pivotal moment in the story, as she prepares to step into the unknown and become something new.

As she settles into her new quarters, Shallan tends to her injured feet and begins to sort through Jasnah's notes and books, which she hopes to use to continue the woman's research and uncover the secrets of the Voidbringers. She is aided by Pattern, the mysterious spren who has been accompanying her, and who reveals that he was sent to her because of her connection to the Voidbringers and her ability to withstand the truth. Shallan comes to terms with her grief over Jasnah's death and the loss of her own sketchpads, but finds determination to continue Jasnah's work and stop the return of the Voidbringers. The crowd is shocked by Adolin's brutal methods, and the highjudge is forced to declare him the winner. After the duel, Adolin gives the Shardblade to his brother Renarin, and Navani notes that Adolin's tactics may have been wise in masking his true skill and making his opponents underestimate him. The chapter ends with Adolin reflecting on his actions and the potential consequences of his victory.

He meets a man named Zahel, a former soldier who has retired to the ardentia, and learns that Renarin is seeking to be chosen by a master for training with a sword, despite having health problems that have prevented him from practicing in the past. As Kaladin observes the scene, he is approached by Syl, a mysterious being who is bound to him, and they discuss the nature of Shardblades and the Radiants who once wielded them. Adolin joins in, and Kaladin is forced to defend himself against the prince's attacks. In the heat of the moment, Kaladin's Stormlight fades, leaving him drained and vulnerable. Zahel intervenes, stopping Adolin and declaring Kaladin "dead" once again. After the sparring match, Zahel offers to train Kaladin, but Kaladin declines, still struggling with his own abilities and limitations. Syl, the mysterious being bound to Kaladin, appears and questions him about his actions, suggesting that his motivations may not have been entirely about practicing his fighting skills.

However, as they prepare to defend themselves against the bandits, Shallan notices a group of deserters approaching from behind. She takes a risk and approaches the deserters, who are former soldiers, and convinces some of them to help defend the caravan against the bandits. The deserters are motivated by a desire to redeem themselves and start anew. Shallan's words and actions have a transformative effect on the deserters, and they charge into battle to help the caravan. Meanwhile, Shallan reflects on her own abilities and the power of transformation, which she believes is connected to her skill in Lightweaving. As the battle rages on, Shallan waits anxiously, hoping that the deserters will be enough to save the caravan.

Meanwhile, Vathah, the leader of the deserters, struggles with the moral implications of their actions and the possibility of redemption. Shallan also takes possession of Tvlakv's slaves, offering them a chance to work for her and pay off their debt. As the storm passes, Dalinar emerges from a side room, where he had been discussing something with Navani. Kaladin asks to speak with Dalinar and reveals a shocking secret: he was a soldier in Amaram's army and witnessed Amaram's betrayal and slaughter of his own men. Kaladin also reveals that Amaram took a Shardblade from one of his victims and has been passing it off as his own. Dalinar is skeptical and asks for proof, but Kaladin has none. Dalinar tells Kaladin to keep the accusation quiet and says he will look into it. Kaladin is frustrated and feels that Dalinar is not taking him seriously. As Kaladin walks back to the warcamp, he is joined by Syl, who is concerned about his behavior and the danger of seeking revenge against Amaram. Meanwhile, back at the Bridge Four barrack, Kaladin meets a new recruit named Punio, who is Lopen's cousin and a former soldier in Brightlord Roion's army. Kaladin also has a conversation with Shen, a parshman who is a member of Bridge Four, who reveals that he feels like a slave and wants to be treated as a equal member of the team. The chapter ends with Natam arriving, frantic and out of breath, and announcing that the king is in danger and that an assassin is on the loose.

The chapter begins with Kaladin rushing to the palace after hearing that the king is in danger. Upon arrival, he finds that the king, Elhokar, is alive and well, despite an attempt on his life. The would-be assassin had sabotaged the balcony railing, which had given way, leaving the king hanging for his life. Kaladin inspects the damage and determines that the sabotage was deliberate and likely done by someone with access to the king's private chambers. He also discovers that a Shardblade was used to cut the metal, which narrows down the list of suspects. Highprince Dalinar reveals that he believes the assassination attempt was done by someone on the inside, possibly a servant or a member of the King's Guard. Dalinar decides to relieve the captain of the King's Guard of his post and assign him to a different command, and he puts Kaladin in charge of guarding the king, tasking him with choosing a team of trusted men to protect the monarch. The chapter ends with Kaladin feeling the weight of his new responsibility and Dalinar warning him that a more competent assassin may still be lurking, waiting to strike.

As they near the Shattered Plains, Shallan reflects on her plans to meet with Highprince Dalinar Kholin and reveal a secret that could be crucial to his interests. Meanwhile, she engages in a conversation with Pattern, a mysterious spren, about the nature of truth and reality. Shallan also meets with Tyn, the leader of the caravan guards, who reveals that she has discovered Shallan's true identity and intentions. Tyn offers to help Shallan navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries at the Shattered Plains, in exchange for being included in Shallan's plans. Shallan agrees to work with Tyn, recognizing that she could benefit from the woman's expertise and connections. As they discuss their plans, Shallan begins to realize the risks and challenges that lie ahead, and the importance of building alliances and gathering resources in order to achieve her goals.

Kaladin is initially hesitant and struggles to control his horse, but eventually manages to get the hang of it. He then decides to try riding a more spirited horse, Dreamstorm, which proves to be a challenging but exhilarating experience. After being thrown off the horse, Kaladin speaks with Dalinar, who informs him that he will be putting in a requisition for Kaladin and five other men to practice riding every day for the next few weeks. Kaladin also continues to investigate the attempted assassination of the king, asking Natam and Moash questions about their whereabouts on the night of the attempt. Her father, a brightlord, holds regular feasts and expects Shallan to dress up and behave, but she often finds herself lost in thought, staring at the wall. Her brother Jushu arrives, drunk and disheveled, and tells her that their brother Balat has been starting fires again. As they talk, Shallan catches a glimpse of a glowing strongbox hidden behind a painting in her father's chambers, which seems to be emitting a powerful white light. Jushu doesn't see it, and Shallan is left wondering if she's going crazy. The strongbox seems to hold a dark significance, and Shallan feels a sense of foreboding and fear as she gazes at it.

Shallan and Tyn, a skilled thief, continue their journey with the caravan, approaching the Shattered Plains. Tyn teaches Shallan how to adopt different accents and personas to deceive others, emphasizing the importance of being comfortable in various roles. They encounter a group of soldiers, led by a darkeyed man named Kal, who claim to represent Highprince Dalinar Kholin's personal guard. Shallan, posing as a Horneater princess, engages in a comedic exchange with Kal, using her newfound skills to extract an apology and a pair of boots from him. After the soldiers depart, Tyn praises Shallan's performance, noting that she needs to practice and become more comfortable in her roles. Shallan reflects on the value of kindness, while Tyn cautions her that as a con artist, she must learn to balance her kindheartedness with the demands of her new profession.

Sadeas is determined to rebuild Alethkar through conquest and sees the current state of the kingdom as fragile and in need of destruction. He attends a duel between Adolin Kholin and Eranniv, where Adolin deliberately fights beneath his capacity to make his win seem lucky and avoid scaring off potential future opponents. Sadeas is impressed by Adolin's strategy and sees potential in the young man, deciding to stop discouraging people from fighting him and instead observe how the situation develops. Meanwhile, Sadeas's wife Ialai reveals that she has discovered the nature of the disturbance at the king's chambers, which was an assassination attempt, and they discuss how to exploit Dalinar's weaknesses and undermine his authority.

She reflects on her past and her desires, wondering what she wants to be and if she can be multiple things at once. Tyn, her companion, cautions her about the dangers of their planned scam and advises her to maintain an air of mystery and independence in order to succeed. Shallan agrees to continue with the plan, but is secretly unsure and worried about the potential consequences. As they prepare to leave, Shallan does one final drawing, feeling a sense of excitement and trepidation about the challenges ahead.

He hears his brother Gavilar's laughter and feels a sense of joy and familiarity. However, as he tries to open the balcony doors, he realizes that he is actually in Urithiru, the ancient tower city. Dalinar had been trying to figure out the locking mechanism to access the roof of the tower, and he finally succeeds in opening the trapdoor. On the roof, he confronts the Stormfather, a powerful being who is the personification of storms and the divine. The Stormfather reveals that he is a spren, a fragment of the Almighty, and that he has been trying to stop Dalinar and his army from preparing for the impending disaster. Dalinar demands to know why the Stormfather sent him visions and then tried to destroy him, and the Stormfather explains that he was required to send the visions and that Dalinar was too slow to prepare. The Stormfather also reveals that the Everstorm is a new thing, but an old design, and that it will transform the parshmen into Voidbringers. Dalinar decides to unite the people and bring them together, and he makes the Second Ideal of the Bondsmiths, becoming a Knight Radiant. He then meets with Kaladin, Shallan, and Renarin, and they discuss their plans to find and recruit other Knights Radiant. Kaladin decides to go to Alethkar to warn his people and to try to save as many as he can from the Everstorm. Dalinar gives Kaladin his blessing and promises to get him as much Stormlight as possible for his journey. The chapter ends with Dalinar, Shallan, and Renarin preparing for the challenges ahead, knowing that they will have to face the Everstorm and the Voidbringers.
