Under the cover of darkness, they sneak into the Heaven Awaiting Cemetery, aided by the corrupt groundskeeper, Nuno, who has been bribed to assist them. The duo digs into the grave, using disguises and tools to avoid detection. The chapter focuses on Kaul Hilo, the new Pillar of the No Peak clan, as he navigates the complex web of alliances, rivalries, and family dynamics following the death of his grandfather, Kaul Sen. At the funeral, Hilo is aware of the presence of his enemies, including Ayt Madashi, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, and Yun Dorupon, a traitor to the Kaul family. After the ceremony, Hilo meets with various individuals, including Eiten, a former Fist who has lost his arms and is seeking a new role in the clan. Hilo agrees to help Eiten take over his wife's family's hoji distillery and offers him a place in the clan as a Lantern Man. Later, Hilo's aunt, Mrs. Teije, arrives and begs for his help in rescuing her son, Runo, who is being held by a jade smuggler named Zapunyo in the Uwiwa Islands. Despite his sister Shae's warnings, Hilo decides to take action and plans to meet with Zapunyo, recognizing the potential danger but also the need to protect the clan's reputation and family members. The chapter ends with Hilo preparing to meet with Anden, his former friend and ally, with whom he has a complicated and unresolved history.
Anden, still reeling from his past mistakes and exile from the Kaul family, attends the funeral reception of Kaul Sen, where he encounters his former classmates and is met with a mix of curiosity and hostility. He is eventually summoned to meet with Kaul Hilo, the new Pillar of the No Peak clan, who is torn between his desire to welcome Anden back into the family and his frustration with Anden's refusal to wear jade. Hilo reveals that he has made arrangements for Anden to leave for Espenia, where he will pursue an education and gain experience, in an effort to keep him safe from the Mountain clan and to give him a chance to redeem himself. Anden is devastated by the decision, feeling that he is being exiled and forced to abandon his life on Kekon. He accuses Shae, the Weather Man, of orchestrating his departure, and the two share a tense and emotional confrontation before Anden storms out of the house, feeling lost and betrayed.
The Horn of the No Peak clan, Maik Kehn, discovers that the Kaul family gravesite has been robbed, and the thief has made off with a significant amount of jade. Kehn informs the Pillar, Kaul Hilo, who is furious and tasks his brother-in-law, Maik Tar, with finding the thief. Tar, also known as the Pillarman, rededicates himself to the task and manages to capture a junior Fist from the Mountain clan named Seko. However, during interrogation, Seko takes his own life rather than betray his clan, leaving Tar without any leads. The failure to extract information from Seko leads to a retaliation attack by the Mountain clan, resulting in the death of one of Kehn's men and injuring another. The incident sparks public outrage and puts pressure on the No Peak clan to end the cycle of violence. Despite the setback, Kehn remains calm and advises Tar to wait for the thief to make another move, confident that someone with a large amount of stolen jade will eventually resurface.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, faces a difficult decision regarding a contract that was awarded to a smaller, non-Kekonese firm, bypassing the long-standing Lantern Man, Mr. Enke. Hami, the Master Luckbringer, intervenes and offers a compromise, reducing tribute payments to support Mr. Enke's business. Shae reflects on her handling of the situation, acknowledging that she may have mishandled it and prioritized cost savings over clan relationships. Her conversation with Woon, the Weather Man's Shadow, highlights the need for trust and careful decision-making in clan leadership. Later, Shae receives a call from Ree Turahuo, the Weather Man of the Mountain clan, who presses her for a decision on the upcoming Kekon Jade Alliance shareholder vote. The two engage in a tense discussion, exchanging veiled threats and accusations, with Ree urging Shae to reconsider her stance on the jade mining suspension and Shae insisting on accountability for the Mountain clan's past transgressions. The conversation ends with Ree proposing a meeting between their clans, suggesting a potential shift in the dynamics between the rival Green Bone clans.
Bero's life has taken a dramatic turn since acquiring a large amount of jade. He now lives in his own apartment, attends an underground training club called the Rat House, and sells shine to other unsanctioned jade users. At the Rat House, Bero and his friend Mudt practice their Strength and Lightness abilities, and Bero has developed a sense of Perception that allows him to detect when others are wearing jade. However, his supply of shine is running low, and he is approached by a man named Soradiyo, who claims to be a recruiter for the notorious jade trafficking ring, Ti Pasuiga. Soradiyo offers Bero and Mudt a chance to become "rockfish," or jade smugglers, with the promise of high pay and access to more jade and shine. While Mudt is hesitant and wants to continue training on their own, Bero is tempted by the offer and the potential for wealth and power. As Bero navigates this new world, he begins to see Mudt as a liability and a hanger-on, rather than a true partner, and his own ambition and desire for respect and strength start to drive his decisions.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, attends a lecture by Professor Tau Maro at Jan Royal University, where she is impressed by his knowledge and enthusiasm. After the lecture, they go on a date, and Shae finds herself drawn to Maro's charming and thoughtful nature. As they spend more time together, Shae begins to open up to Maro, sharing her concerns about the clan war and her role as Weather Man. Maro, who is not a Green Bone, confesses his feelings for Shae and his insecurity about not being able to measure up to her expectations. Despite their differences, they share a passionate night together. The next morning, Shae meets with her brother, Hilo, the Pillar of No Peak, to discuss a potential truce with the Mountain clan. Shae argues that a truce is necessary to rebuild the clan's strength and to address the growing concerns about the economy and national security. Hilo is initially resistant, but eventually agrees to consider the proposal, saying he will discuss it with his Horn, Maik Kehn, and get back to Shae after his trip to the Uwiwa Islands.
Kaul Hilo's wife, Wen, discovers a long-lost letter and photograph from Hilo's brother's ex-wife, Eyni, revealing that she has a two-year-old son who is Hilo's nephew. The letter, which was written before Lan's death, expresses Eyni's desire to return to Janloon with her son, Nikolas, and for him to know his family. Wen convinces Hilo to write back to Eyni and invite her to return, offering the clan's assistance and support. Hilo agrees, putting aside his past differences with Eyni for the sake of his nephew. As Hilo prepares to leave for the Uwiwa Islands to meet with the jade smuggler Zapunyo, Wen expresses her concerns for his safety, but Hilo reassures her that he has thought things through and will be careful. The chapter ends with Hilo's promise to be cautious and his excitement about becoming a father, which he believes will bring about changes in his life.
Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, travels to the Uwiwa Islands to meet with Zapunyo, a notorious jade smuggler, to retrieve his cousin Teije Runo, who is being held by Zapunyo. Upon arrival, Hilo is met with a show of force by Zapunyo's barukan mercenaries, who are dressed in flashy, imitation jade. Hilo is unimpressed and sees through the facade, recognizing that the majority of the jade on display is inert and decorative. Zapunyo attempts to negotiate with Hilo, proposing a business partnership to share profits from the black market jade trade. However, Hilo is adamant that he will not tolerate jade smuggling and warns Zapunyo to stay off Kekonese shores. The meeting ends with Hilo's refusal to cooperate, and Zapunyo's veiled threats. After the meeting, Hilo retrieves his cousin Teije, who is lounging by the pool, and brutally beats him for his reckless behavior, before ordering him to get dressed and leave with him.
Kaul Hilo and his Green Bones leave Zapunyo's estate, but their departure is met with hostility as they are ambushed by corrupt police officers at the airport. Hilo uses his Deflection abilities to protect himself and his men, and they fight back against their attackers. The Green Bones emerge victorious, but not without some injuries. As they fly back to Kekon, Hilo tends to the wounded and has a heart-to-heart talk with Lott, a young Finger who is struggling to come to terms with having taken a life. Hilo offers words of wisdom and comfort, reminding Lott that their enemies were a threat to the clan, not just to him personally. Meanwhile, Hilo's thoughts turn to his family and his responsibilities as Pillar, and he reflects on the challenges ahead, including his complicated relationships with his cousin Teije and his friend Anden, who is now living in Espenia.
Anden arrives in Port Massy, Espenia, after being exiled from Kekon by his cousin, Kaul Hilo. He is greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Hian, a Kekonese couple who have agreed to host him. Anden struggles to adjust to his new life, feeling like a stranger in a foreign land. He begins taking classes in Immersive Espenian for Speakers of Other Languages at Port Massy College, where he meets students from various countries. Anden's experiences in Espenia are marked by cultural shock and difficulty understanding the local customs and language. He witnesses a violent incident involving the Crews, a local gang, and later meets a mysterious Green Bone who intervenes in a domestic dispute. Despite the challenges, Anden is determined to make the most of his time in Espenia and prove himself. He starts to learn more about the city and its ways, including the presence of Green Bones and the differences between Espenian and Kekonese cultures.
The Pillars of the Mountain and No Peak clans, Ayt Mada and Kaul Hilo, meet in secret in the town of Gohei to discuss a potential truce. The meeting is facilitated by the neutral Black Tail clan and includes senior penitents from the Temple of Divine Return to ensure the discussions are taken seriously. Ayt proposes a truce, citing the devastating consequences of continued war, including the loss of jade exports, foreign intervention, and the undermining of the national government. Hilo agrees to the truce, but only if the Mountain clan agrees to certain conditions, including the return of stolen jade, cooperation in eliminating black market smuggling, and a fair division of disputed territories. Ayt accepts these terms, and the two Pillars seal their agreement. However, in a private conversation, Ayt reveals her true intentions, proposing a merger between the clans with Hilo as her Horn, and warning him that if he refuses, she will eventually have to kill him. Hilo rejects her offer, making it clear that he will never swear oaths to her and that their truce is merely a temporary agreement. The meeting ends with a sense of unease and foreboding, as both Pillars acknowledge that their conflict is far from over.
The chapter begins with a formal press conference where Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, and Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, announce a truce between their clans. The event is attended by hundreds of high-ranking members of both clans, as well as journalists and government officials. After the conference, Hilo returns home to a family dinner, where they discuss the implications of the truce and the potential threats still facing the clan. Hilo reveals that the truce is merely a temporary measure and that he plans to eventually bring down the Mountain clan. He tasks his allies with gathering intelligence on the Mountain's weaknesses and preparing for a future strike. The chapter also explores Hilo's personal life, including his relationship with his wife Wen and their impending parenthood. Wen shares her concerns about the clan's decisions and the potential dangers facing their family, and Hilo reassures her that he will always protect her and their children. The chapter ends with Hilo agreeing to reach out to his nephew's mother, Eyni, who has been unresponsive to Wen's attempts at communication.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, travels to the village of Opia with Woon and Hami to retrieve Yun Doru, the former Weather Man who betrayed the clan. However, upon arrival, Shae finds Doru to be frail and terminally ill with cancer. Despite his past treachery, Shae is unable to bring herself to kill him, and instead, they share a moment of nostalgia and discussion about the future of the clan. Doru reveals that he had intended to keep his promise to Shae but was persuaded by Kaul Sen to break his word. He also warns Shae that Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, will never allow her to be safe and advises her to form an alliance with Ayt's potential successor. Before Shae can take action, Doru takes his own life with a pistol, accepting the clan's justice. Shae orders the jade on the table to be collected and leaves the village, instructing the locals to bury Doru in the mountains with a respectful epitaph.
Wen, the wife of Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, visits the Celestial Radiance Bath & Tea House, a women-only facility, where she meets with informers who provide her with information about the Mountain clan. One of her informers, Mila, gives her a copy of the new Weather Man's schedule, which could be useful in understanding the Mountain's business priorities. Wen also meets with Mrs. Lonto, a hairdresser who owns a salon in the Mountain-controlled district of High Ground, who provides her with gossip and information about the Mountain's internal dynamics. Wen learns about the Koben family, who have a claim to the leadership of the Mountain clan through Ayt Mada's nephew, Koben Atosho. However, the family's status is threatened by other families, including the Ven and Iwe families. Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, explains the situation to the family and suggests that forming an alliance with the Koben family could strengthen their position and potentially bring about peace between the clans. Hilo decides to meet with Ven Sandolan, a wealthy and influential member of the Mountain clan, to discuss potential alliances and strategies.
Anden, living in exile in Port Massy, Espenia, settles into a routine and becomes fascinated with the local Green Bone community, who keep their jade-wearing a secret. He befriends his hosts, the Hians, and begins to learn about the Espenian culture. However, his life takes a turn when he accidentally takes the wrong bicycle, leading to a confrontation with the bike's owner, Carson Sunter. Anden, feeling insulted and disrespected, engages in a fierce fight with Sunter, ultimately emerging victorious but earning the disdain of the local Kekonese community. The Hians explain to Anden that dueling is not tolerated in Espenia and that he may face legal and social repercussions for his actions. Fearing for Anden's safety and their own reputation, the Hians decide to seek help from the Pillar, a high-ranking Green Bone leader, to resolve the situation and protect Anden from potential retaliation.
Anden visits the Pillar of Southtrap, Dauk Losunyin, at his home, accompanied by his hosts, the Hians. Dauk Losunyin is a Green Bone leader in Espenia, but his style and demeanor are vastly different from the Green Bone warriors Anden is familiar with in Janloon. The evening begins with a traditional Kekonese dinner, but the conversation turns serious when Anden shares his story of getting into a fight with a local gang member, Carson Sunter. Dauk Losunyin reveals that he knows about Anden's past and his connection to the Kaul family, and offers to help resolve the situation with the gang. He tasks his associate, Rohn Toro, with delivering a payment to the gang leader, Skinny Reams, to smooth things over. Anden is struck by the similarities between the Green Bone culture in Espenia and Janloon, despite the differences in their societies. He also begins to realize that Dauk Losunyin's assistance may come with expectations of future reciprocity, given Anden's association with the powerful Kaul family.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, meets with Ambassador Gregor Mendoff and Colonel Leland Deiller of Espenia at the White Lantern Club to discuss the recent lifting of the jade mining suspension and Kekon's jade export contracts. Shae makes it clear that Kekon will not increase its jade exports to support Espenia's military actions in Oortoko, citing the country's concerns about jade being used as a tool of war and the potential harm it could cause to Kekon's reputation and national identity. Instead, Shae offers to provide Espenia with valuable information about Ygutan's SN1 production facilities, which could be used to equip their military with jade, in exchange for reduced tariffs and increased access to the Espenian market for Kekonese companies. The meeting is tense, with both sides negotiating and trying to assert their influence, but ultimately, Shae's proposal is met with interest, and the Espenians agree to consider her requests.
Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, travels to Lybon, Stepenland, to meet with his nephew Nikolas's mother, Eyni, who is his late brother Lan's ex-wife. Hilo is accompanied by his Pillarman, Maik Tar. Upon arrival, Hilo is struck by the cleanliness and order of the city and is determined to persuade Eyni to return to Janloon with her son. Eyni is hesitant, citing her desire to leave the past behind and start a new life with her boyfriend, Lors. Hilo offers her a life of comfort and status in Janloon, but Eyni is resistant, fearing the dangers and complexities of Green Bone life. Hilo proposes a compromise, suggesting that Nikolas split his time between Stepenland and Kekon, but Eyni is unsure. As Hilo and Tar prepare to leave, Hilo instructs Tar to gather information about Lors, sensing that there may be more to the man than meets the eye. Hilo agrees to meet with Eyni and Lors again in a few days to discuss the proposal further.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, spends a morning with her lover, Professor Maro, discussing their personal lives and the complexities of being a Green Bone. Maro reveals his mixed heritage, being the son of a Kekonese mother and a Shotarian father, and his struggles with identity and family secrets. Meanwhile, Shae faces a crisis at work as her trusted Shadow, Woon, tenders his resignation due to unrequited feelings for her. Shae convinces Woon to stay on for another year, but the situation is awkward and tense. Just as they are dealing with this personal issue, news breaks that Espenian ground forces have invaded Oortoko, and the office erupts into chaos. Chancellor Son Tomarho gives a speech calling for diplomacy and mutual respect, but Ayt Madashi, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, seizes the opportunity to rally support for her clan and criticize the government's alliance with the Espenians. Shae realizes that her brother, Kaul Hilo, is unreachable due to his trip abroad and orders her secretary to get him on the phone as soon as possible.
Kaul Hilo's trip to Lybon, Stepenland, takes a dramatic turn when he discovers that his nephew's mother, Eyni, is planning to leave the country with her son, Nikolas, without informing him. Hilo confronts Eyni, who reveals her intention to raise Nikolas as a Stepenish citizen, away from the influence of the Green Bone culture. The conversation escalates, and Hilo, feeling betrayed and hurt, uses his jade abilities to kill Eyni. He then takes Nikolas with him, deciding to raise the child as a Green Bone. Hilo returns to Janloon, where his wife, Wen, gives birth to their son, Rulinshin. Hilo introduces Nikolas to his new cousin, and the family begins to adjust to their new dynamic. Meanwhile, Hilo tasks his Pillarman, Tar, with dealing with Eyni's boyfriend, ensuring that the situation is handled discreetly. The chapter ends with Hilo's family coming together, as he looks to the future and his role as a father and a leader.
Anden is introduced to the Grudge Hall, a secret gathering place for Kekonese people in Port Massy, Espenia, where they can socialize, gamble, and settle disputes. He attends a cockfighting event and witnesses a clean-bladed duel between two men, which is interrupted by the arrival of police officers. The Pillar of Southtrap, Dauk Losunyin, intervenes and pays a fine to avoid trouble. After the incident, Anden is driven home by Cory, the Pillar's son, who reveals his jade studs and initiates a romantic encounter with Anden. The two share a kiss and intimate moment, marking a significant turning point in Anden's life. As Anden navigates his feelings and identity, he is drawn to Cory's charismatic and confident personality, despite being unsure about his own desires and loyalties. Bero and Mudt, two young jade users, are supervising a group of impoverished Uwiwan workers who are searching for jade scraps in the mountains of Kekon. The workers, known as pickers, are paid for each piece of jade they find, but the work is hazardous and closely monitored by Bero and Mudt to prevent theft. As they work, Bero and Mudt hear the approach of Green Bones, members of a powerful clan, and try to escape with the valuable jade scraps. However, they are caught and attacked by the Green Bones, who are led by Nau Suen, the Horn of the Mountain clan. Despite being outmatched, Bero and Mudt are spared and released, with a message for their employer, Soradiyo, to discuss a potential alliance with Nau Suen. The encounter leaves Bero shaken, but also intrigued by the possibility of advancing his own interests and gaining more power.
Shae and Hilo meet with Ven Sandolan, the patriarch of the Ven family, on his private yacht to discuss a potential alliance between their clans. Ven expresses his dissatisfaction with Ayt Mada's leadership of the Mountain clan and hints at his own ambitions for his family to take control. Hilo offers No Peak's support for the Ven family's rise to power, including financial incentives and military backing, in exchange for their cooperation in bringing about Ayt's downfall. The meeting ends with a tentative agreement between the two parties, with Ven agreeing to secretly gather support for a coup within the Mountain clan. As they leave, Shae expresses her dislike for Ven's arrogance, but Hilo is optimistic about the potential benefits of their new alliance, seeing it as an opportunity for No Peak to gain the upper hand over their rivals.
Maik Kehn, the Horn of the No Peak clan, leads a team of Green Bones to intercept a cargo ship, the MV Amaric Pride, in international waters. The ship is carrying a large shipment of goods, including jade, which is being smuggled by the barukan, a group of mercenaries working for the notorious jade smuggler Zapunyo. Kehn and his team, including Fists Juen and Iyn, and Fingers Lott and Dudo, board the ship and engage in a fierce battle with the barukan guards. After defeating the guards, Kehn interrogates one of the surviving barukan, who eventually reveals the location of the jade shipment. The Green Bones discover that the jade is hidden in false boxes of clothing, with the gems disguised as ornamentation. Kehn orders the ship to change course and dock in Janloon's Summer Harbor, where the clan can take control of the jade and deal with the smuggling operation. Throughout the chapter, Kehn also reflects on his personal life, including his plans to propose to his girlfriend, Lina, and his role as a leader and mentor to his fellow Green Bones.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, is dealing with the aftermath of a newspaper article that reveals her past as an Espenian spy. The article, likely planted by Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, accuses Shae of betraying her clan and country by working with the Espenian military. Shae is furious and determined to contain the damage, but she knows that ignoring the allegations or denying them outright will not be effective. She instructs her aide, Woon, to investigate the reporters and their connections to the Mountain clan, and to arrange a meeting with the editor-in-chief of the newspaper. Meanwhile, Shae's personal life is also under scrutiny, as her brother Hilo has met her boyfriend, Maro, and has expressed some reservations about their relationship. Hilo reminds Shae that as a member of the Kaul family, her decisions are not just personal, but also affect the clan, and that she will need to seek his approval if she decides to marry Maro.
Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, meets with his Horn, Maik Kehn, to discuss the recent seizure of a cargo ship carrying smuggled jade. Kehn presents Hilo with a bag of jade buttons, which were found hidden in boxes of clothes on the ship. Hilo is pleased with Kehn's success and rewards him with some of the jade. The two discuss the Mountain clan's adherence to their agreement to crack down on jade smuggling, and Kehn assures Hilo that they are keeping an eye on the situation. Hilo then meets with a family, the Eyuns, whose daughter was brutally assaulted by Espenian soldiers. The family seeks vengeance, but Hilo explains that the soldiers are being held by their own government and cannot be touched. He advises the family to accept compensation from the Espenians and to use the money to care for their daughter. Later, Hilo meets with a group of clan members, including Councilman Kowi and Master Luckbringer Hami, who express concerns about the Weather Man, Shae's, past as an Espenian spy and her current relationship with a foreigner. They suggest that she should resign or take a less visible role, but Hilo defends his sister and refuses to replace her, citing her competence and loyalty to the clan. The meeting ends with Hilo's visitors leaving, visibly dissatisfied with his decision. Hilo then calls Shae's office, requesting to speak with her about the situation.
Bero's life as a rockfish, or jade smuggler, has stalled due to the Mountain clan's increased efforts to stop jade smuggling. He and his partner Mudt have not received any new job opportunities from their manager Soradiyo, and Bero is growing impatient. When Soradiyo finally meets with them, he proposes a new job that involves taking out a Green Bone, but Bero refuses, citing the dangers and risks involved. He has learned from his past experiences that trying to kill a Green Bone directly is not worth the potential rewards, and he would rather stick to scavenging for jade or other less risky opportunities. Mudt, on the other hand, is interested in the job, but Bero's refusal leads to Soradiyo walking out on them, leaving their future prospects uncertain.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, meets with Lantern Man Mr. Enke to discuss a potential investment in a real estate development in Port Massy, Espenia. Shae agrees to provide financing for the project, with the condition that Mr. Enke will rent apartments to Kekonese students at a subsidized rate. In return, the clan will cover the difference in income and reduce Mr. Enke's tribute obligations. Meanwhile, Shae is dealing with the aftermath of a scandal surrounding her past as an Espenian spy, and she receives a call from her boyfriend, Maro, who is upset about the situation. Later, Shae discovers that she is pregnant and is forced to confront the implications of this news on her position as Weather Man and her relationship with Maro. She visits the Temple of Divine Return, seeking guidance and trying to come to terms with her situation. Ultimately, Shae realizes that she cannot continue as Weather Man if she is pregnant and decides to take action to protect her position and the clan.
On Heroes Day, a national holiday in Kekon, Kaul Hilo, the Pillar of the No Peak clan, is required to make public appearances and show respect to the monarch, Prince Ioan III. However, the day is marred by tension between Hilo and his rival, Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the Mountain clan, who uses the occasion to criticize Hilo's sister, Shae, the Weather Man of No Peak, for her past as an Espenian spy. Ayt's speech is a thinly veiled attack on Shae's character and loyalty to Kekon, and Hilo is forced to restrain himself from responding. Just as it seems like Ayt has succeeded in provoking Hilo, Shae appears and interrupts Ayt's speech, challenging her to a clean-bladed duel. The sudden confrontation leaves the crowd in shock, and Hilo is left to wonder what Shae's actions will mean for their clan's reputation and their ongoing struggle for power.
The chapter centers around the duel between Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, and Ayt Mada, the Pillar of the Mountain clan. The duel is a result of Shae's challenge to Ayt, which was issued in response to Ayt's public accusations against Shae's character and loyalty to Kekon. The fight is intense, with both women exchanging blows and showcasing their impressive jade abilities. Despite being outmatched, Shae manages to hold her own against Ayt, even landing a few significant hits. However, Ayt's superior skill and experience eventually gain the upper hand, and Shae is forced to concede the duel to avoid being killed. Ayt, aware of the potential consequences of killing Shae, decides to spare her life, citing the need for every Green Bone in Kekon. The chapter ends with Shae being taken away for medical attention, her jade removed by Ayt, and the tension between the two clans still simmering.
Shae, the Weather Man of the No Peak clan, returns home after a 12-day hospital stay following her duel with Ayt Mada. She meets with her Shadow, Woon, to discuss the current state of the clan and her office, and later with Councilman Kowi and two Lantern Men who had advocated for her removal as Weather Man. Shae forgives them and warns them that if they ever question her loyalty again, she will not be so lenient. She then meets with Master Luckbringer Hami to discuss his future in the clan and offers him a position to start a new branch of the Weather Man's office in Port Massy, Espenia. Hami is hesitant due to the requirement that he give up his jade, but Shae assures him that it's a temporary measure and that he will be able to store his jade safely in Janloon. Shae also meets with her boyfriend, Maro, and they have a tense conversation about her decision to duel Ayt Mada without discussing it with him. Maro feels that Shae kept him in the dark and that he doesn't really know her, and Shae admits that she has done things she never thought she would and is unsure of what she can promise him. The conversation ends with Maro uncertain about their relationship, but willing to remain friends with Shae for the time being.
Anden, a Kekonese young man living in Port Massy, Espenia, is working part-time at a hardware store and attending school. He spends his free time with his friends, including Cory, the son of a Green Bone leader, at the grudge hall, a gathering place for Kekonese people. One evening, the grudge hall is attacked by the Crews, a local gang, and Anden's friends, who are Green Bones, defend the hall. Anden, who is not a Green Bone, helps to delay the police and allows his friends to escape. Rohn Toro, a Horn and a skilled Green Bone, takes charge and helps to evacuate the building. After the attack, Rohn hides his jade-stitched gloves in a secret location to avoid detection by the police. Anden reflects on the difficulties of being a Kekonese in Espenia, where jade is banned, and the challenges faced by Green Bones like Rohn, who must hide their abilities to avoid persecution.
Anden, a Kekonese young man living in Espenia, is struggling to come to terms with his identity and his place in the world. He is troubled by his lack of jade and his dependence on others for protection, particularly Cory, the son of a Green Bone leader. After a violent incident at the grudge hall, a gathering place for Kekonese people, Anden is forced to confront the reality of his situation and the dangers faced by the Kekonese community in Espenia. The Pillar of Southtrap, Dauk Losun, visits Anden and his host family, the Hians, and asks for Anden's help in seeking assistance from his powerful Green Bone clan in Kekon. Dauk believes that the Kaul family's resources and influence could help the Kekonese community in Espenia, which is being persecuted and targeted by local gangs and corrupt police. Anden is hesitant, knowing that he has been exiled from his clan and has no sway over his cousins. However, the Hians and Dauk's wife, Sana, persuade him to try to contact his clan and seek their help, for the sake of the Kekonese community.
The chapter revolves around a high-level meeting between the leaders of the No Peak clan, including Kaul Hilo and his sister Shae, and the secretary of international affairs of the Republic of Espenia, Quire Corris. The meeting takes place on Euman Island Naval Base and is attended by other prominent Kekonese politicians and military personnel.
