The story revolves around Vis, a young and skilled fighter, as he navigates the complexities of the Catenan Academy and the Hierarchy's politics. Vis's past is marked by trauma, including the death of his family and his experiences as an orphan. He is eventually adopted by Ulciscor, a Magnus Quintus, who sends him to the Academy to uncover secrets and gather information. Vis forms alliances and friendships with other students, including Callidus, Emissa, and Aequa, while also facing challenges and dangers from rival students and the Anguis, a terrorist organization. Throughout the story, Vis participates in various competitions and challenges, including the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition where students must navigate a treacherous forest and complete tasks to win the Heart of Jovan. Vis's journey is marked by betrayal, loss, and self-discovery, as he uncovers secrets about the Academy, the Hierarchy, and his own past. Ultimately, Vis emerges as a strong and determined individual, driven to make a difference in the world and bring about change to the corrupt system of the Hierarchy.
The chapter begins with a vivid and intense scene of the protagonist, Vis, recalling a traumatic event from their past where they were dangling over a rocky ledge, saved only by their father's grip. The scene then shifts to the present, where Vis is working as a guard in a prison, playing a game of Foundation with their colleague, Hrolf. They are interrupted by a visitor, Sextus Hospius, who arrives with official documentation and demands to speak with a prisoner named Nateo. Vis escorts Hospius to the deepest level of the prison, where the prisoners are strapped to mysterious devices known as Sappers. As they approach Nateo's cell, Hospius speaks to him in a dead language, Vetusian, and Vis realizes that the two men know each other. The conversation between Hospius and Nateo is cryptic, but it becomes clear that Nateo is desperate to be released and Hospius is trying to extract information from him. When Nateo becomes violent, Vis intervenes, and in the process, accidentally touches the Sapper, risking his own safety. After the incident, Hospius thanks Vis and offers him a silver coin for his discretion, hinting that he may be able to help Vis advance in his career. As Vis returns to the guardroom, he overhears a conversation between Hospius and Hrolf, in which Hospius expresses interest in Vis's abilities and Hrolf reveals that Vis is intelligent and skilled, but aloof. The chapter ends with Vis leaving the prison, lost in thought, and heading to the Theatre, a place that seems to hold significance for him.
Vis, a young and skilled fighter, is forced to participate in a brutal bout against a Sextus, a member of a higher social class, at the Theatre in Letens. The fight is arranged by Septimus Ellanher, who has her own motivations and is willing to put Vis in harm's way for her own gain. Vis, aware of the risks, prepares for the fight by greasing his body to prevent the Sextus from getting a good grip and potentially imbuing objects to use against him. As the fight begins, Vis stands confident and ready, despite being at a disadvantage due to the Sextus's superior strength and social status. The crowd is eager and excited, and the outcome of the fight is far from certain. Vis's past and his reasons for fighting are hinted at, but the focus is on the present moment and the impending violence.
The scene unfolds on the stage of the Theatre, where Vis is about to engage in a brutal fight against a Sextus, a member of a higher social class. As the crowd erupts in cheers and jeers, Vis focuses on the fight, using his mental clock to pace himself. The Sextus, fueled by arrogance and a desire to embarrass Vis, goads him with personal attacks, targeting his past and his abandonment as an orphan. Vis's emotions surge, and he launches a ferocious counterattack, pouring all his fury into a series of precise and powerful blows that leave the Sextus dazed and stumbling. With cold, calculated fury, Vis continues to assault the Sextus, ignoring the pain and his own weariness, until the Sextus is finally defeated. As Vis is pulled off his opponent, he realizes that his victory has come at a cost: he has lost his bet and will barely earn anything from the fight. The chapter ends with Vis being led away from the stage, his vision blurred and his body aching, as the crowd's stunned reactions echo through the Theatre.
The chapter picks up where the previous one left off, with Vis dealing with the aftermath of his fight at the Theatre. He is forced to comply with a charade orchestrated by Septimus Ellanher, who announces that Vis has been banned from the Theatre for cheating. Vis is frustrated and enraged, but he manages to keep his emotions in check, knowing that things could be worse if he doesn't play along. He is eventually left alone in Ellanher's office, where he is visited by Gaufrid, who surprisingly refunds Vis's wager and expresses his admiration for Vis's performance in the fight. Vis later returns to the orphanage, where he lives, and is met with the news that a potential adopter, a Quintus, will be visiting the orphanage the next day. Matron Atrox, the woman in charge of the orphanage, warns Vis to stay out of the way, as his presence could reflect poorly on her. Vis agrees, but is secretly hiding a travelogue he stole from the Bibliotheca, which contains information about a possible escape route. He manages to hide the book and his extra earnings in a secret cavity in his room, and then prepares for a much-needed rest, knowing that he will have to face another challenging day ahead.
Vis wakes up in the orphanage to find that a potential adopter, a Quintus, is visiting. He is tasked with helping the other children prepare for the interview, but his mind is preoccupied with the sudden arrival of Hospius, the man he met at the prison the previous night. As Vis tries to avoid interacting with Hospius, he is eventually summoned to the library for a private meeting. Hospius reveals that he is actually a Quintus named Ulciscor and that he has been searching for Vis. Ulciscor is intrigued by Vis's ability to resist the Sapper's effects and proposes a deal: in exchange for Vis's cooperation, he will help Vis escape the orphanage and potentially gain a position of power. Vis is cautious but agrees to hear Ulciscor out, and they engage in a lengthy conversation about Vis's education, understanding of the Hierarchy, and his thoughts on various topics. Ulciscor is impressed by Vis's knowledge and critical thinking, but expresses concerns about Vis's temperament and ability to control his emotions. Despite these reservations, Ulciscor ultimately decides to offer Vis a chance to work with him, and they prepare to inform the matron of the good news.
Vis's adoption by Ulciscor, a Magnus Quintus, is formalized, and he leaves the orphanage with his new guardian. As they board a Transvect, a massive Will-powered transportation device, Vis is astonished by its scale and technology. Ulciscor reveals that he is taking Vis to the Catenan Academy, a prestigious school for the children of high-ranking officials, where Vis will be a student and also work as a spy for Military, one of the three senatorial pyramids. Ulciscor suspects that Religion, another senatorial pyramid, is hiding something important at the Academy, possibly related to pre-Cataclysm technology or a powerful weapon. Vis's task is to gather evidence of this without being detected, as the Academy is strictly controlled by Religion. Ulciscor's true motives and the extent of his power are also revealed, leaving Vis with a sense of unease and uncertainty about his new situation. As the Transvect travels to its destination, it experiences a sudden emergency stop and then an explosion, putting Vis and Ulciscor in a precarious situation.
Vis and Ulciscor's journey takes a drastic turn when their Transvect, a massive transportation device, is attacked with a Will shell, causing it to crash in the middle of a dense forest. Ulciscor, with his exceptional strength and agility, helps Vis escape the burning wreckage by jumping from the Transvect to the ground. After surviving the crash, they cautiously approach the wreckage, where they encounter a group of men who claim to be maintenance workers. However, Ulciscor's suspicions are aroused, and he kills one of the men when he detects a lie. The situation escalates further when Ulciscor is shot with an arrow, presumably by a hidden assailant, and the remaining men prepare to finish him off. Vis is left to navigate this perilous situation, torn between his loyalty to Ulciscor and the need to protect himself from the unknown dangers surrounding them.
Vis finds himself in a desperate fight for survival after the Transvect crashes in a forest. He manages to defeat three untrained men, but soon faces a new threat from a mysterious woman named Sedotia, who reveals herself to be a member of the Anguis, a group that has been searching for Vis. Sedotia attempts to persuade Vis to join her and the Anguis, revealing that they had planned for him to be on the Transvect and had intended to make contact with him earlier. However, Vis refuses, citing his desire for a normal life and his decision to work with Ulciscor, the Magnus Quintus who has taken him under his wing. Sedotia warns Vis that he is not ready for the Academy and that Ulciscor will be a formidable opponent, but Vis is resolute. As Sedotia disappears into the forest, Vis is left to drag Ulciscor to safety and figure out how to operate the Transvect's controls. Despite his injuries and fatigue, Vis manages to get the Transvect moving again, but not before Sedotia issues a threatening ultimatum: meet her at a naumachia in Caten within a month, or face the consequences.
Vis awakens in the infirmary of the Catenan Academy, where he is met by two students, Emissa and Indol, who are curious about his arrival on a damaged Transvect. After a brief conversation, they flee as someone approaches, and Vis is left to ponder his situation and what to reveal about the events leading to his arrival. A physician, Veridius, attends to Vis's wounds and asks questions about the attack on the Transvect, which Vis answers cautiously to avoid revealing too much. Just as Vis is starting to feel uneasy about the questioning, Ulciscor, his new guardian, arrives, and the conversation is interrupted. Ulciscor's presence is commanding, and his interaction with Veridius suggests that he is a man of authority and influence. As Vis observes Ulciscor, he notices that his new guardian seems composed, despite the events of the previous day, and that his leg appears to be healed, with no visible bandaging. The scene ends with Ulciscor's attention focused intently on Vis, his expression unreadable.
Vis and Ulciscor leave the Catenan Academy after a brief meeting with Principalis Veridius, who had been questioning Vis about the attack on their Transvect. As they depart, Ulciscor reveals that he has a personal stake in uncovering the secrets of the Academy, having lost his brother Caeror, who was allegedly killed to cover up a conspiracy. Vis agrees to investigate two potential sites on the island, despite the risks and challenges involved. Along the way, Ulciscor shares more about the Academy's security measures, including the Seawall, a pre-Cataclysm technology that surrounds the island and only allows Transvects to pass through at a specific access point. Vis also learns that Ulciscor killed a man, and while he doesn't explicitly condemn the action, he notes the hypocrisy of the Hierarchy's Birthright law, which prioritizes the protection of human life. As they await their Transvect, Vis reflects on his decision to work with Ulciscor and the dangers that lie ahead, wondering if he's in over his head.
Vis and Ulciscor arrive in Caten, the great harbour capital of Deditia, after a two-hour journey on a Transvect. Vis is awestruck by the city's vastness and grandeur, feeling a mix of emotions as he gazes out at the sprawling metropolis. As they make their way to the Praedium District, Vis is still reeling from the events of the past two days, including the attack on the Transvect and his encounter with Sedotia, a member of the Anguis. Ulciscor reveals that they will be heading to his family estate in Sarcinia, where Vis will spend the next two months being tutored by Lanistia, a Sextus. Upon arrival, Vis meets Lanistia, who is initially displeased with Ulciscor's tardiness and the unexpected presence of Vis. Despite the awkward introduction, Lanistia's demeanor softens, and she welcomes Vis to Villa Telimus, where he will be staying for the next two months. As Vis settles into his new surroundings, he is aware of the many challenges and dangers that lie ahead, including his upcoming tutelage and the potential threats from Sedotia and the Anguis.
Vis arrives at Villa Telimus, the estate of his new guardian, Ulciscor, and meets Lanistia, a tutor, and Kadmos, the house steward. As he settles into his new surroundings, Vis becomes aware of the underlying tensions between Ulciscor and Lanistia, who seem to be hiding something from him. Despite his exhaustion and injuries, Vis decides to snoop around the villa and overhears a conversation between Ulciscor and Lanistia, discussing the attack on their Transvect and the possible involvement of the Anguis, a group Vis has previously encountered. They also mention the leader of the Anguis, Melior, and the Correctors, who are searching for someone infected with an unknown entity. Vis learns that Ulciscor believes he was led to Vis by chance and that Vis is "made" for a certain purpose, which Lanistia is skeptical of. Vis is Caught by Kadmos while snooping, and after a brief exchange, Vis returns to his room, feeling overwhelmed by the events of the day and the secrets that seem to be surrounding him.
Vis is awoken in the early morning by Lanistia, who puts him through a rigorous intellectual assessment, pushing him to his limits with rapid-fire questions on various subjects. Despite his exhaustion and injuries, Vis manages to answer the questions to the best of his ability. After the session, Lanistia reveals that she was testing his recall under pressure and his emotional readiness for the Academy. Vis is shocked and outraged by her methods, but Lanistia remains composed, explaining that she has experienced her own share of losses, including the loss of her eyes, which were taken by the Academy. She warns Vis that there is always something more to lose and advises him to focus on his lessons, which will begin at dawn. Vis, though still reeling from the experience, nodding in acquiescence, and Lanistia leaves, leaving him to rest and prepare for the challenges ahead.
Vis has a conversation with Lanistia, his tutor, during lunch, where she compliments his reactions and instincts in a fight. However, she soon reveals that she intends to test his skills in a sparring match, first against a man named Conlis, and then against herself. Despite his initial confidence, Vis struggles against Lanistia, who uses her skills and a twig as a weapon to evade his attacks and strike him repeatedly. Vis becomes increasingly frustrated and angry, but ultimately concedes defeat when Lanistia gains the upper hand. After the match, Lanistia tells Vis that he needs to improve his discipline and technique, and offers to help him train to become better. Vis, still smarting from his defeat, agrees to work with Lanistia to improve his skills.
Vis begins his training with Lanistia in a massive, intricate maze called the Labyrinth, a replica of a training device used at the Academy. The Labyrinth is a complex network of stone walls that can be manipulated using a special bracer with onyx stones, each controlling a specific section of the maze. Vis struggles to master the bracer, causing several panels to break or malfunction due to his inexperience and lack of precision. Despite the challenges, Lanistia remains demanding and unforgiving, pushing Vis to continue practicing and improve his skills. As they train, Vis learns more about the Labyrinth and its purpose in testing a student's ability to use Will, a powerful force that is central to the Academy's teachings. Lanistia also reveals that the Labyrinth is a secret, built by Ulciscor and his staff without the knowledge of the rest of the villa's inhabitants, and that Vis's training is meant to give him an advantage over his peers at the Academy.
Vis's daily routine at Villa Telimus is intense and demanding, with Lanistia and Kadmos pushing him to his limits physically and intellectually. However, on this particular day, Vis is awakened by Kadmos instead of Lanistia, and is instructed to meet Magnus Quartus Advenius Claudius at the baths. Advenius, a powerful senator, has arrived to meet Vis and discuss his upcoming attendance at the Academy. During their conversation, Advenius reveals that he wants his daughter Aequa, who is also attending the Academy, to train with Vis, and Vis agrees, seeing an opportunity to use this to his advantage. Advenius's true motives are unclear, but it is apparent that he is maneuvering for position and trying to gain leverage over Ulciscor. Vis also learns that Advenius is investigating the attack on the Transvect and may suspect Ulciscor of being involved with the Anguis. As Advenius departs, Vis is left to contemplate the implications of their conversation and the potential consequences of his agreement to train with Aequa.
Vis continues his intense training with Lanistia, honing his physical and mental skills in preparation for the Academy. During a sparring session, they discuss his meeting with Advenius, who is investigating the Transvect attack and suspects Ulciscor of being involved with the Anguis. Lanistia reveals that Advenius has a long-standing rivalry with Ulciscor and is seeking to prove a link between him and the Anguis. Vis also learns that Advenius mentioned Caeror's death as a suicide, which Lanistia vehemently denies, stating that Veridius killed him. As Vis prepares to leave for the Festival of Jovan and his presentation to the Senate, he reflects on the circumstances surrounding Caeror's death and the potential implications for Ulciscor's motivations. With his training progressing well, Vis is tasked with running the Labyrinth as a challenge upon his return from Caten, and he sets off for the naumachia, where he plans to meet Sedotia and navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries.
Vis travels to the Catenan Arena with Aequa Claudius to attend the naumachia, a grand event held during the Festival of Jovan. Along the way, they engage in conversation, with Aequa testing Vis's knowledge and skills, and Vis pretending to be overwhelmed by the grandeur of Caten. As they approach the arena, Aequa reveals more information about Caeror Telimus's death, which Vis's guardian, Ulciscor, had been investigating. Vis begins to suspect that Ulciscor's motivations for sending him to the Academy may be personal and not backed by the Military, and that he may be on his own in uncovering the truth. Upon arriving at the arena, Vis is struck by its massive scale and the sheer number of people attending the event, and he begins to worry about finding Sedotia, a member of the Anguis, in the crowded venue.
Vis attends the naumachia at the Catenan Arena with Aequa, where they watch a grand re-enactment of a battle. Before the event, Vis sneaks away to meet Sedotia, a member of the Anguis, who leads him through the sewers to meet Melior, the leader of the Anguis. Melior is revealed to be Estevan, a trusted advisor of Vis's father from Suus, who has been presumed dead. Estevan asks Vis to join the Anguis and become a Domitor at the Academy, but Vis refuses, citing his desire not to perpetuate violence and his experience with a village that was raided by the Anguis. Estevan shares his conviction that the Republic attacked Suus for a reason that has not been revealed, and hints that Vis will soon discover the truth. Sedotia draws Vis's blood with a stone stylus, which seems to have a special property, and gives it to him as "protection" before sending him back to Aequa. Vis returns to his seat, still reeling from the encounter, and watches as the naumachia begins.
The scene unfolds at the Catenan Arena, where Vis and Aequa are attending a naumachia, a grand event featuring a re-enactment of a historic battle. However, the event takes a drastic turn when the leader of the Anguis, Arturus Melior Leos, appears in the middle of the lake, condemning the audience for their complicity in the Hierarchy's oppressive system. As he speaks, a series of catastrophic events occur, including explosions, destruction of parts of the stadium, and the slaughter of thousands of people. Vis and Aequa attempt to flee, but not before witnessing the horrific scenes of death and destruction. They eventually make their way to the sewer system, where they escape the chaos. However, Vis decides to return to the Arena, driven by a sense of responsibility to stop Estevan and protect the innocent, despite the danger and his own fears. He leaves Aequa to find her way to safety and plunges back into the icy water, determined to confront Estevan and put an end to the carnage.
Vis returns to the Arena to confront Estevan, the leader of the Anguis, who is responsible for the catastrophic events unfolding around them. As Vis approaches Estevan, he notices a distortion in the air, a visual warping that seems to be connected to Estevan's power. Despite his fear, Vis manages to grab Estevan and hold a stylus to his neck, pleading with him to stop the destruction. Estevan remains calm, stating that they are what the Hierarchy makes them and that inaction is complicity. The energy around them builds, and Estevan's muscles tense, but instead of fighting back, he takes Vis's hand and uses the stylus to kill himself, saying that a broken blade can still cut.
Vis awakens in his room at Ulciscor's villa after a week-long sleep, feeling stiff and sore. He is greeted by Kadmos, who informs him that Ulciscor will be delighted to see him awake. Ulciscor arrives and explains that Vis's adoption was unanimously ratified by the Senate before the naumachia attack. He also reveals that the attack has caused widespread destruction and chaos, with many deaths and infrastructure problems. Vis asks about the Anguis and Sedotia, and Ulciscor assures him that the villa has extra protection and the Academy will increase its security. Ulciscor then shares his story about his brother Caeror's death, which he believes was not a suicide as reported, but a murder orchestrated by Veridius. He provides Vis with coded letters from Caeror, which suggest that Veridius was involved in something sinister. Ulciscor explains that he has been trying to uncover the truth about Caeror's death and has been working with Lanistia, who was Caeror's girlfriend and was injured during the incident. Vis is shocked to learn that Lanistia is the woman he has been training with, and that she has been pushing him so hard because of her own trauma and desire for revenge against Veridius. Ulciscor tells Vis that he will have to navigate the complexities of the Academy and the Hierarchy's politics, and that he should be careful. Before leaving, Ulciscor wishes Vis "life and luck" and tells him to be careful.
Vis wakes up at Villa Telimus after a week-long sleep, feeling stiff and sore, but relieved to find that his aches have eased. He begins his training with Lanistia, who initially goes easy on him but eventually returns to her usual demanding self. During their sparring session, a carriage arrives with a stranger named Sextus Gaius Valerius, who claims to be a physician sent by the Senate to examine Vis. Lanistia is skeptical, but Vis agrees to cooperate, and Gaius takes various samples from him, including blood, hair, and nails. Gaius asks Vis to recount his experience at the naumachia, and Vis provides a halting account, trying to reveal as little as possible. Gaius shows Vis a series of sketches, including one that resembles the vision Vis saw before Estevan's death, and Vis tries to play it cool, but Gaius is not fooled. After Gaius leaves, Lanistia questions Vis about his actions at the naumachia, suggesting that he may have been motivated by a desire to do the right thing, rather than self-preservation. Vis becomes defensive, but Lanistia's words leave him wondering about his own motivations and the expectations placed upon him.
Vis reflects on his past experiences and the events that have led him to this point as he prepares to leave for the Academy. He has a final sparring session with Lanistia, who is uncharacteristically quiet and eventually offers some words of encouragement, suggesting that Vis has the potential to succeed. Vis also speaks with Kadmos, who shares his own story of loss and resilience, and Vis is struck by the scars on Kadmos's back, a reminder of the brutal treatment he suffered at the hands of the Hierarchy. As Vis departs for the Academy, he feels a sense of emptiness and loss, but also a renewed sense of purpose. He is aware of the challenges that lie ahead, including the possibility of encountering the Anguis and navigating the complex politics of the Hierarchy. Despite his anxieties, Vis is determined to succeed and make the most of his time at the Academy.
Vis arrives at the Catenan Academy, where he is greeted by Septimus Filo, also known as Ulnius, who is the Academy's physician. Ulnius is warm and welcoming, and Vis is surprised by the man's kindness. As they walk to the Principalis's office, Ulnius warns Vis about the possibility of wild wolves, known as alupi, in the area. Vis meets with Principalis Veridius, who is charming and disarming. Veridius discusses Vis's adoption by Ulciscor and his upcoming education at the Academy. He also warns Vis that he will not tolerate any rule-breaking in pursuit of Ulciscor's revenge against him. Vis is shown to his quarters and meets a fellow student, Callidus, who is tasked with showing him around. However, their introduction is cut short when a larger student, Eidhin, confronts Callidus and Vis intervenes, leading to a physical altercation. Despite trying to control his anger, Vis punches Eidhin, drawing the attention of the entire hall. The situation is defused by the intervention of Emissa and other Class Three students, but not before Praeceptor Nequias arrives and reprimands Vis for his actions. Vis is left to follow Nequias, unsure of the consequences of his actions.
Vis awaits his punishment for striking a higher-ranking student, Eidhin, and is eventually summoned to the Principalis's office. He gives a genuine apology to Eidhin, using a traditional Threefold Apology, which Eidhin accepts, albeit reluctantly. As a result, Vis is given a penance of mucking out the stables every evening for two months, but avoids expulsion. Afterwards, Vis talks to Praeceptor Taedia, who seems kind and understanding, and warns him to stay away from Iro Decimus, a student with a powerful father. Vis then returns to the dormitory, where he tries to make amends with Callidus, the student he was trying to help earlier, but Callidus is still bitter. Vis also meets Drusus Corani, a charismatic student who tries to befriend him, but Vis rebuffs him after Drusus and his friends start bullying Callidus. The chapter ends with Vis reflecting on his actions and feeling a sense of unease, as he tries to navigate the complex social dynamics of the Academy.
Vis wakes up early in the Academy's dormitory and begins his day by washing up and preparing for breakfast. He meets Aequa, who is waiting for him, and they have a conversation about the naumachia and Vis's actions during the event. Aequa is curious and probing, but Vis manages to deflect her questions and provides a plausible explanation for his knowledge of the sewer entrance. They take a walk around the Academy's grounds, and Aequa shows him various buildings and points of interest. As they talk, Vis realizes that Aequa is intelligent and perceptive, but also cautious and aware of the social dynamics at the Academy. After their conversation, Vis attends his first class, where he meets Praeceptor Ferrea and impresses her with his knowledge of the principles of Will. He answers questions and participates in a test, finishing quickly and earning Ferrea's attention. Meanwhile, Vis befriends Callidus, a fellow student who is smart and witty, and they bond over their shared experiences and interests. As the day comes to a close, Vis is reminded of his punishment, mucking out the stables, and he heads to his assignment, lost in thought about his plans and goals at the Academy.
Vis begins his punishment of mucking out the stables, where he meets Emissa, a student from Class Three, who is also doing penance. They work together and have a friendly conversation, discussing the Academy's social dynamics and Vis's goals. Emissa warns Vis about the challenges he will face in advancing through the classes, particularly with Praeceptor Dultatis, who looks down on students from outside the heartland. Despite the potential dangers of getting too close to someone from a higher class, Vis enjoys Emissa's company and finds himself attracted to her. After finishing their task, Emissa leaves to study, and Vis reports back to Ferrea, who informs him that he will be moving up a floor to Room Nine and will be reporting to Praeceptor Dultatis in the morning, a surprise promotion that Vis is not sure he is ready for.
Vis wakes up in his new room in Class Six at the Academy, where he meets his roommate Eidhin, a large and intimidating boy with auburn hair and complex tattoos on his chest. Despite their initial tense interaction, Vis decides to try to make a good impression and introduces himself to the other Class Six students at breakfast. However, they are cold and unwelcoming, and eventually, they leave him sitting alone at the table, except for Eidhin, who ignores him. Vis decides to join his friend Callidus at the Class Seven table, where they share a meal and conversation, earning them the reputation as the "Pariah Table". Vis is determined to make the Class Six students pay attention to him and prove himself, despite their initial rejection.
Vis, a student at the Catenan Academy, participates in the Labyrinth, a challenging test of skills that requires navigation, strategy, and teamwork. He is paired with Eidhin, a fellow student, and they must work together to evade hunters and reach the end of the maze. Despite Vis's initial progress and clever maneuvers, he is eventually caught by two hunters, Stult and Tanila, and loses the challenge. Throughout the experience, Vis observes the behavior and reactions of his peers and superiors, including Praeceptor Dultatis and Principalis Veridius, and gains insight into the social dynamics and politics of the Academy. The chapter highlights Vis's intelligence, resourcefulness, and determination, as well as his struggles to navigate the complexities of his new environment and prove himself among his peers.
Vis, still reeling from the frustration of being disqualified from the Labyrinth challenge despite his success, engages in a conversation with Principalis Veridius. Veridius explains that Praeceptor Dultatis's behavior towards Vis is likely due to a long-held grudge against the Telimus name, stemming from the death of Vis's uncle, which had ramifications for the Academy's staff. Veridius advises Vis that he cannot intervene in Dultatis's class, but encourages Vis to find ways to overcome the obstacles he faces. Veridius also hints that Vis could practice in the Labyrinth during early morning hours when it is empty. Vis, feeling trapped and helpless, decides to take matters into his own hands and plans to explore the ruins beyond the Academy's wall that night, seeking a way to act and potentially gain an advantage.
Vis has a conversation with Callidus, a fellow student, about the unfair system of the Hierarchy and the Academy. Callidus shares his knowledge of the census data and the true ratios of social classes, revealing that the system is designed to favor those already in positions of power. Vis realizes that hard work and merit are not enough to succeed in the Academy and that he needs to find another way to advance. He decides to take matters into his own hands and plans to sneak out of the Academy at night to explore the nearby ruins, which may hold secrets about the Hierarchy's activities. Vis is determined to uncover the truth and gain an advantage, despite the risks involved. Meanwhile, he continues to navigate the complex social dynamics of the Academy, forming a bond with Callidus and observing the behavior of other students, including the enigmatic Eidhin.
Vis decides to sneak out of the Academy at night to explore the nearby ruins, searching for information that could help him advance and gain an advantage. He navigates the dangerous path and eventually discovers a hidden entrance to an ancient structure, where he finds a series of cryptic writings and diagrams on the walls. The writings seem to be a mix of languages, including an old form of Vetusian, and the diagrams appear to be schematics for some kind of construction. As Vis delves deeper into the ruins, he comes across a large hall with a series of corpses, each impaled by an obsidian blade, and a mysterious plate with strange symbols. When he touches the plate, the room erupts in a blinding light, and he hears a rasping voice warning of "Obiteum" and "Synchronous". Vis barely escapes the ruins, avoiding detection by Principalis Veridius and his companion, and returns to the Academy, where he is questioned by Marcus, but Eidhin covers for him. Vis is left to ponder the secrets he uncovered and the mysterious warnings, trying to make sense of the events and their connection to his own situation and the Academy's secrets.
Vis's day at the Academy begins with a chaotic breakfast incident where he intentionally injures his hand to avoid suspicion about his activities. He is taken to the infirmary by Ulnius, who treats his wound and advises him to be more careful. Vis then meets up with Callidus, and they discuss the Academy's social dynamics and Vis's surprising ability to run the Labyrinth. Emissa, a student from Class Three, approaches them and congratulates Vis on his rumored success in the Labyrinth, sparking a conversation about the competitive nature of the Academy. Callidus later shares with Vis the reason behind his demotion to Class Seven, revealing the intricate politics of the Catenan Republic and the tensions between the senatorial pyramids. Vis learns that Callidus's father, a prominent figure, has disowned him, and that Callidus deliberately chose a lower class to avoid being a potential hostage in the escalating conflict. As the day ends, Vis heads back to the Labyrinth to watch his peers struggle with the challenge, while Callidus returns to his duties, and they both share a moment of camaraderie and understanding.
Vis watches his peers struggle with the Labyrinth challenge and has a conversation with Eidhin, a fellow student, about the difficulties of the Academy and their shared dislike of Praeceptor Dultatis. Vis reveals to Eidhin that he snuck out of the Academy the previous night to explore the nearby ruins, where he discovered strange writings and diagrams, including a map and a cryptic warning. Eidhin agrees to keep Vis's secret in exchange for Vis teaching him the Cymrian language. The two students mock Dultatis in Cymrian, pretending to translate their insults as compliments, and Vis agrees to meet with Eidhin every night after his punishment is over to work on his language skills. Despite the challenges and dangers of the Academy, Vis feels a sense of hope and connection with Eidhin, and the day ends on a relatively positive note.
The chapter takes place on the first day of the Festival of the Ancestors, where Vis, a student at the Catenan Academy, embarks on a Transvect to attend the festival with his fellow students. Along the way, he converses with Callidus, who reveals that he won't be attending the festival due to his father's disapproval. Vis then meets up with Aequa, Emissa, and Indol on the Transvect, and they engage in a lively discussion about their lives and experiences. As they approach the Necropolis, a vast burial ground with thousands of tombstones and mausoleums, the atmosphere becomes more somber. Upon arrival, they are greeted by a large crowd, and Vis is met with a mix of curiosity and hostility. A man approaches him, addressing him as "Catenicus" and grabbing his arm in a fierce gesture, causing tension among the group.
Vis attends the Festival of the Ancestors with his fellow students, where he is mobbed by people who recognize him as the hero of the naumachia. He is eventually rescued by Scitus and meets up with Ulciscor, who takes him to the Telimus tomb. There, Vis learns more about the family's history and meets Lanistia, who is still grappling with the loss of her sight. Ulciscor and Lanistia question Vis about his experiences at the Academy, including his excursion to the ruins, and Vis shares his plan to explore the ruins further using an imbued grapple. Ulciscor agrees to help Vis, but warns him of the risks and the need for secrecy. As the night wears on, Vis meets Ulciscor's family, including his parents and wife, Relucia, who is revealed to be Sedotia, a member of the Anguis and the woman who crashed the Transvect and shot Ulciscor. The revelation raises questions about Ulciscor's true intentions and the extent of his involvement with the Anguis.
Vis meets Relucia, Ulciscor's wife, at the Telimus family tomb during the Festival of the Ancestors. Relucia's behavior is overly affectionate and friendly, but Vis soon realizes that this is just an act. Once they are alone, Relucia reveals that she is still working with the Anguis and wants Vis to continue on his current path at the Academy. She explains that the Anguis's goal is to destabilize the Hierarchy and create an opportunity for change. Vis is skeptical and angry, but Relucia assures him that she will not harm him as long as he cooperates. She also reveals that she has been watching him for over a year and that there is one other person in the Anguis who knows about him. Relucia warns Vis that if he tries to kill her, the other person will reveal his identity to the Anguis, putting him in danger. Vis and Relucia discuss their plans and motivations, with Vis expressing his disgust at the Anguis's methods and Relucia justifying their actions as necessary for change. The conversation ends with Relucia telling Vis to attend the Festival of Pletuna in Caten, where she will contact him again.
Vis attends a family gathering at the Telimus tomb during the Festival of the Ancestors, where he meets Ulciscor's family, including his wife Relucia, who is revealed to be a member of the Anguis. The family argues about Ulciscor's investigation into his brother's death, and Vis is drawn into the conflict. After the gathering, Ulciscor takes Vis to the Transvect, where he provides him with a makeshift grapple made of stone cuffs and a locator. Vis plans to use the grapple to sneak onto the Transvect and travel to the other side of Solivagus, where he will investigate further. Despite his reservations, Vis decides to go through with the plan, and Ulciscor wishes him luck. As the Transvect departs, Vis hides on the servicing platform at the back, preparing to make his move.
Vis sneaks onto a Transvect and jumps off into the Sea of Quus, swimming to the island of Solivagus to explore the ruins. After a challenging climb up the cliff, he finds the ruins and discovers a large, crimson dome with no visible entrance. However, when he says the phrase "Luceum, Obiteum, and Scintres Exunus", the dome opens, revealing a dark passageway. As he ventures deeper into the passageway, he finds a corridor lined with nude corpses pinned to the wall with obsidian blades, a sight that fills him with horror. He continues on, finding a platform overlooking a vast, dark space, but as he approaches the edge, the platform begins to descend, and he is left stumbling in the darkness.
Vis finds himself in a massive, ancient hall after descending on a platform. He meets a mysterious, eyeless man named Artemius who seems to be under some sort of control, only responding to specific questions about the hall and the test that lies ahead. Vis learns that he must wear a control bracer to navigate the Labyrinth, a maze that will allow him to reach the gate to Obiteum and Luceum. However, the path is guarded by deadly Remnants, dark masses that can flay human skin. After witnessing Artemius's gruesome demise, Vis meets another sightless woman, Elia, who offers to guide him. Vis decides not to take the test and instead chooses to leave, using the platform to return to the entrance. As he escapes, he wonders if this is what happened to Caeror and realizes that he still has much to learn about the mysterious world he has stumbled into, including the secrets of Obiteum, Luceum, and the true purpose of the Labyrinth.
Vis navigates a treacherous forest, exhausted and hungry, as he attempts to reach the Transvect before it departs. He stops to rest and eat, and encounters a young, injured alupi pup, which he decides to help instead of killing for food. After tending to the pup's wound, Vis continues his journey and eventually reaches the cliff edge, where he uses a locator needle to guide him towards the Transvect. With the needle's help, he locates the Transvect and uses a stone grapple to latch onto it as it passes overhead. Vis pulls himself up and into the Transvect, where he dresses and composes himself before exiting at the Academy platform. He is met by Praeceptor Taedia, who is unaware of his ordeal and merely comments on his late arrival. Vis returns to his dormitory, where he is greeted by Eidhin, who notes his disheveled appearance but does not press the issue. Vis then retires to bed, exhausted and injured, but relieved to have made it back to the Academy undetected.
Vis wakes up in pain after a previous ordeal, but manages to conceal his injuries as he attends breakfast at the Academy. The atmosphere is somber due to the recent death of a student, Feriun, who took his own life after not being promoted to Class Three. Vis is eventually summoned by Praeceptor Taedia, who informs him that he will be advancing to Class Five, but only if he can defeat Ianix Carenius, a skilled duelist, in a training duel. Vis accepts the challenge, despite knowing that Ianix is a formidable opponent. As he prepares for the duel, he is forced to return to his stable duty as a form of punishment by Praeceptor Dultatis, who is trying to hinder Vis's chances of winning. Emissa, a student from Class Three, offers to help Vis practice with Will-imbued training armor, but Vis must first fulfill his obligation to tutor Eidhin in the Cymrian language. Eidhin, however, insists that Vis should focus on practicing for the duel and takes him to the gymnasium, where Emissa is waiting with the training armor.
Vis practices with Emissa and Eidhin in the gymnasium, using Will-locked armor to train for his upcoming duel with Ianix. Despite initial struggles, Vis improves throughout the evening, eventually beating Eidhin. The next morning, Callidus confronts Vis about his suspicious past, suggesting that he may be the illegitimate child of a powerful senator. Vis denies the accusations, but Callidus remains skeptical. Throughout the day, Vis notices that his classmates are talking about his upcoming duel, with some expressing confidence in Ianix's abilities and others questioning Vis's mysterious past. As the day draws to a close, Vis prepares to face Ianix in the duel, determined to prove himself and advance in the Academy.
Vis participates in a duel against Ianix, a skilled opponent, to determine his placement in Class Five at the Catenan Academy. Despite his best efforts, Vis struggles to land a decisive hit due to the unfamiliar Amotus device and Ianix's exceptional skills. However, Vis soon realizes that Ianix's armor may be rigged, and he decides to use unorthodox tactics to gain the upper hand. In a surprising turn of events, Vis resorts to brutal and intense physical combat, eventually knocking Ianix unconscious and disabling his armor. The match ends with Vis being declared the winner, and he earns his place in Class Five, but not without leaving a lasting impression on the academy and its students. Vis's actions are met with a mix of shock, horror, and admiration, and he is now poised to face new challenges and opportunities as he advances in the academy.
Vis's life at the Catenan Academy has improved significantly since his victory over Ianix. He has formed close bonds with Callidus and Emissa, and his academic performance has excelled under the guidance of Praeceptor Taedia. However, Callidus reveals a dark secret: several students from Class Three and Four have died or disappeared in the past four cycles, allegedly due to "accidents" during the Iudicium. Callidus warns Vis of the dangers of advancing to the higher classes, but Vis is determined to continue his progress. As Vis navigates his new life in Class Four, he must balance his relationships, academic pursuits, and the risks associated with his growing reputation and influence within the Academy.
Vis has been promoted to Class Four at the Catenan Academy and is tasked by Praeceptor Scitus to connect with his new classmates. He attends dinner with them and attempts to build relationships, despite his reputation as a killer. Vis learns that his classmates are divided between those from Military and Religion families, and he notices that they seem to be forming alliances along these lines. After dinner, Vis meets with Eidhin, a friend from Class Six, and they continue their language lessons in Cymrian. Eidhin reveals that Principalis Veridius had asked him to confront Vis on his first day, implying that it was a test or a way to send a message to Callidus's father. Eidhin also shares a dark secret about his past, revealing that he was imprisoned in a Sapper for killing three Praetorians before attending the Academy. Despite this revelation, Vis assures Eidhin that their friendship remains unchanged.
Vis's lessons in Class Four at the Catenan Academy are more intense and challenging than before, with a focus on debates, discussions, and verbal sparring. He notices that his classmates are forming alliances along factional lines, with some students from Military and Religion families working together. During a Labyrinth run, Iro, a student from Class Three, attempts to distract Vis with personal insults and provocative comments, causing Vis to lose his focus and perform poorly. However, Vis redeems himself in his own run, working successfully with Aequa, his partner. After the Labyrinth session, Indol, a student from Class Three, approaches Vis and invites him to train with their group over the trimester break, revealing that his father has taken an interest in Vis's progress and wants to express gratitude for Vis's actions at the naumachia. Vis accepts the offer, despite some initial reservations, and learns that they will be training at Indol's family estate on the island of Suus, a place that holds significant personal connections for Vis.
Vis is anxious about attending the Festival of Pletuna in Caten, where he will be meeting with his classmates and potentially putting himself at risk of being recognized from his past. He is also looking forward to meeting with Relucia, a member of the Anguis, who may be able to help him navigate the dangers of the festival. Vis's friends notice that he is distracted and try to reassure him, but he is unsure of how to balance his desire to fit in with his need to keep his past a secret. Meanwhile, Callidus is jealous of Vis's opportunity to attend the festival and teases him about the possibilities of gambling and women. As Vis prepares to leave for Caten, he reflects on the complexities of the Labyrinth, a training device used at the Academy, and wonders about its true purpose. He also thinks about his relationships with his classmates, particularly Aequa, who seems intelligent and focused, but also potentially suspicious of him. Overall, Vis is nervous about the festival and the potential risks it poses, but he is also determined to make the most of the experience and to uncover more information about the mysterious forces at work in his life.
Vis attends the Festival of Pletuna in Caten, where he is pulled away from his classmates by a mysterious force imbued in his cloak, leading him to a secret meeting with Relucia, a member of the Anguis. Relucia reveals that she orchestrated Vis's invitation to the Military summit in Suus, where he will be expected to spy on a secret meeting between high-ranking Military officials. Vis is hesitant and frustrated, but eventually agrees to cooperate, motivated by the threat that Relucia will harm one of his friends if he fails. The meeting ends with Vis warning Relucia that he will take drastic action if she harms anyone he cares about, and he returns to the festival, determined to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries in the Academy and beyond.
Vis attends the Festival of Pletuna in Caten, where he is pulled into a secret meeting with Relucia, a member of the Anguis. Relucia reveals that she has orchestrated Vis's invitation to a Military summit in Suus, where he will be expected to spy on a secret meeting between high-ranking Military officials. Vis agrees to cooperate, motivated by the threat that Relucia will harm one of his friends if he fails. Later, Vis follows Relucia and discovers that she is involved in a mysterious plot involving severed heads and a discussion about a Cataclysm weapon. Vis is then attacked by two men who reveal themselves to be members of the Anguis, but they are interrupted by Praeceptor Scitus, who reveals that the attack was a ruse to test Vis's abilities. Aequa, who had accused Vis of cheating, apologizes for her mistake and Vis is left feeling angry and betrayed. The chapter ends with Vis reflecting on the events of the festival and the looming trimester break, during which he will be traveling to Suus with the Thirds.
Vis arrives at the island of Suus, his former home, as a guest of Magnus Dimidius Quiscil, one of the men responsible for the invasion that killed his family. Vis is struggling to cope with the emotions of returning to his hometown, which has been heavily altered by the Catenan occupation. He meets with Dimidius and his son Indol, and is introduced to the other guests, including Fadrique, one of his father's former advisers who is now working for the Hierarchy. Vis is torn between his desire for revenge and his need to maintain a facade of cooperation, and he begins to make plans to gather information and potentially sabotage the Catenan occupation. He discovers that his old room's fireplace still has a hidden entrance to a tunnel system, which he hopes to use to his advantage. Vis must navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries at the palace, all while keeping his true intentions and emotions hidden.
Vis attends a dinner at the palace on the island of Suus, where he is forced to navigate a complex web of alliances and rivalries among the Catenan senators. He is questioned by Dimidius Quiscil, one of the men responsible for the invasion of Suus, about his experiences at the naumachia and the weapon used by the Anguis. Vis provides careful and rehearsed answers, trying to conceal his true feelings and intentions. He also interacts with Emissa, a fellow student, who helps him to momentarily forget his surroundings and feel more at ease. After the dinner, Vis sneaks out of his room and explores the secret tunnels beneath the palace, checking for guards and Will-based alarms. He visits the Great Hall, where he used to watch his father give verdicts, and is overcome with memories and pain. Eventually, he returns to his room, exhausted and melancholic, but finds some comfort in thinking about his time with Emissa.
Vis and his classmates attend a breakfast gathering on the island of Suus, where they engage in conversation and activities. Vis is invited to swim, but declines, still struggling with the emotional weight of being back in his hometown. He has a conversation with Belli, who reveals her dislike of swimming and her preference for playing Foundation, a strategic game. Vis also interacts with Emissa, who invites him to sneak out and go swimming at night, but Vis declines, citing his need to focus on other things. The group is then summoned by Fadrique, who takes them to the township for breakfast. However, their plans are disrupted when they are refused service at a tavern by the innkeeper, Menendo, who is hostile towards Fadrique and the Hierarchy. The group eventually finds an alternative place to eat and discusses their plans for training, with Vis's opinions largely being disregarded by his classmates. Despite this, Vis feels a sense of being home for the first time since arriving on the island.
Vis saves Emissa from drowning in a rip current and they take shelter in a cave, where they share a romantic moment. The next day, they return to the palace, and Vis is questioned by Ulciscor, who reveals that he wants Vis to run the Labyrinth at the Iudicium, a potentially deadly test, in order to fulfill his obligation to him. Vis is hesitant and afraid, but Ulciscor is resolute, threatening to put Vis in a Sapper if he fails. Lanistia tries to intervene, but ultimately supports Ulciscor's decision. Vis is left feeling trapped and desperate, with no clear way to escape his situation.
Vis feigns illness to avoid suspicion and spends the day resting, while secretly sneaking into the tunnels to eavesdrop on a meeting between Dimidius Quiscil and other senators. He learns that Military helped the Anguis attack the naumachia and are planning to supply them with a ship, the Navisalus, and potentially weapons and will designs. The senators discuss the potential risks and benefits of their plan, and Vis realizes that he has stumbled upon a significant and potentially dangerous conspiracy. After the meeting, Vis returns to his room, deep in thought, and is confronted by Fadrique, who was waiting for him in the tunnel.
Vis has a secret meeting with Fadrique, a former adviser to his father, in the hidden tunnels of the palace on the island of Suus. Fadrique reveals that he has been working to protect the interests of the Suus people and has been hiding items from Vis's past, including his mother's bow and other family heirlooms. Vis is overwhelmed with emotion as he sees these reminders of his childhood and family. Fadrique shares information about the events that occurred on the island after Vis's family was killed, including the riots and the Hierarchy's use of Sappers to punish those who resisted. Vis learns that many of his countrymen have given up their resistance and are now accepting of the Hierarchy's rule. Fadrique also expresses his admiration for Vis's actions at the naumachia and his pride in Vis for not seeking revenge. The two share memories and stories of Vis's family and the past, and Vis feels a sense of release and connection to his heritage. As the night comes to a close, Vis and Fadrique part ways, with Fadrique offering Vis a place of safe harbor if he ever needs it. Vis reflects on his desire for revenge against Quartus Latani, the man responsible for his family's death, but ultimately decides that violence is not the answer.
Vis reflects on his past and his conversations with his father, who had asked him what gave them the right to rule. He thinks about his father's words on the flaws of the Hierarchy's system, which is built on greed. Vis is back on the island of Suus, where he grew up, and is struggling to cope with the emotions of returning to his hometown. He meets with Fadrique, a former adviser to his father, who reveals that he has been working to protect the interests of the Suus people and has been hiding items from Vis's past. Vis also spends time with his classmates, including Emissa, with whom he has developed a romantic relationship. As the trimester break comes to an end, Vis realizes that he needs to do something to get everyone's attention and advance in the Academy, but he is not sure what that is yet. He returns to the tavern where he was previously refused service and is surprised to be served a traditional king's feast, which makes him feel comfortable and at home. Vis leaves the tavern, feeling a sense of closure and readiness to move forward, and begins to think about what he needs to do to succeed in the Academy and fulfill his obligations.
Vis returns to the Academy after his break on the island of Suus, where he reunites with his friends Callidus and Eidhin. They discuss their experiences during the break, and Vis shares his stories of Suus, though he leaves out many details. Vis also starts practicing with Emissa in the Labyrinth, aiming to improve his skills and potentially advance to Class Three. Meanwhile, Callidus confides in Vis about his troubles with Belli, who has been blackmailing him over stolen documents that could ruin his family's reputation. Callidus is afraid of being expelled or worse if the documents are exposed, and Vis promises to help him find a solution. As Vis navigates his relationships and responsibilities, he begins to formulate a plan to help Callidus and advance in the Academy, despite the risks and challenges involved.
Vis orchestrates a high-stakes game of Foundation against Belli, a student from Class Three, with the goal of winning her spot in the class. Vis intentionally starts the game at a disadvantage, removing one of his pieces, but uses his experience and strategy to gradually gain the upper hand. As the game progresses, Belli becomes increasingly frustrated and desperate, eventually realizing that she is about to lose. Vis offers her a chance to draw, but only if she returns a stolen item to Callidus, a fellow student. Belli agrees, and after verifying that the item has been returned, Vis deliberately wins the game, securing his place in Class Three. The outcome is met with shock and admiration from the other students, and Vis is congratulated by his friends, including Callidus, who is grateful for Vis's help in retrieving the stolen item.
Vis's life as a student in Class Three at the Catenan Academy is intense and challenging, with a focus on advanced subjects and rigorous training in the Labyrinth. The announcement of the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition, adds an extra layer of pressure and tension among the students. Vis must navigate the complexities of forming alliances and choosing teammates for the Iudicium, all while keeping his own secrets and motivations hidden. He asks Callidus and Eidhin to join him, despite the risks and dangers associated with the competition. Callidus is hesitant, but eventually agrees to participate, revealing that he has been hiding documents that detail the dark history of the Iudicium, including the deaths and disappearances of students who have participated in the past. Despite the risks, Vis is determined to succeed and prove himself, and Callidus decides to stand by him, putting their friendship and loyalty to the test.
Vis meets with Principalis Veridius to discuss his team for the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition at the Catenan Academy. Veridius reveals that he has been expecting Vis to choose his teammates carefully and warns him about the dangers of the competition. Vis also meets with Eidhin, who reveals a dark secret about his past and his reasons for not being able to participate in the Iudicium. Vis then asks Aequa to join his team, and after some hesitation, she agrees. Veridius has a private conversation with Aequa, which leaves her shaken, but she still decides to join Vis's team. With his team in place, Vis is now focused on preparing for the Iudicium, which is only three weeks away.
The chapter begins with Vis waking up early on the morning of the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition at the Catenan Academy. He meets with his teammates, Callidus and Aequa, and they discuss their strategy for the competition. Principalis Veridius explains the rules of the Iudicium, including the use of medallions and trackers to monitor the students' progress. Vis's team is given a medallion and a tracker, and they set off into the forest to begin the competition. As they walk, Vis explains his plan to head west and try to stay out of the way of the other teams, in the hopes of avoiding ambushes and getting a head start on the competition. However, their progress is soon interrupted by an attack from an unknown assailant, and Vis is left dazed and injured. The chapter ends with Vis losing consciousness, unsure of what will happen next.
Vis wakes up after being knocked out by Belli and finds himself tied to a tree, with Callidus also tied up nearby. They discuss their situation and the events that led to their capture, including Aequa's betrayal. Vis tries to work on his bonds, but they are too tight. As night falls, they hear Aequa return, and she frees them, explaining that she had pretented to join forces with Iro and Belli in order to gather information and wait for the right moment to strike. She reveals that she slipped a tracker into Iro's food, which will soon activate and lead the safety team to them, eliminating Iro and Belli from the competition. Aequa plans to use Vis's medallion as a decoy to distract the others while she meets up with Vis and Callidus later. The three of them set off into the forest, with Aequa leading the way, as they try to survive the Iudicium and outwit their opponents.
Vis, Callidus, and Aequa are navigating the challenges of the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition at the Catenan Academy. Vis comes up with a plan to steal a tracking plate from one of the safety teams, which would give them an advantage in the competition. Callidus agrees to create a distraction while Vis sneaks into the camp to steal the plate. The plan is successful, but not without close calls and narrow escapes, as Vis and Callidus face off against two Sextii, Borius and Darin. Vis manages to steal the tracking plate, but the encounter is intense and chaotic, with Borius using his strength to hurl trees at Vis. After escaping, Vis examines the tracking plate, but it doesn't seem to be working as expected. He decides to continue with his plan to head west, towards the river and the mysterious dome, leaving Callidus to meet up with Aequa at a predetermined location.
Vis navigates the forest, making his way to the crimson dome, despite feeling uneasy and fearful. He encounters an alupi, a large wolf, which he believes may be Diago, a cub he saved six months prior. Vis tries to cautiously approach the dome, but the alupi blocks his path, growling and baring its teeth. Vis remembers the phrase "Scintres Exunus" and uses it to open the dome's entrance. He slowly makes his way towards the opening, leaving his satchel behind, and the alupi surprisingly does not attack. As Vis steps into the darkness of the dome, he looks back to see the alupi sitting and staring at him, before the entrance closes, plunging him into darkness.
Vis participates in the Labyrinth test, a challenging and potentially deadly challenge, in order to fulfill his obligation to Ulciscor. Before entering the test, he uses a miniature version of the Labyrinth to practice and understand the movements of the Remnants, the dark masses that can flay human skin. He learns that the Remnants are predictable and move at a constant speed, which gives him a chance to navigate the maze. As he enters the Labyrinth, he faces his fears and uses his knowledge to evade the Remnants. However, he is shocked to see Belli's torn body pinned to the wall, which throws him off his focus. Despite this, he regains his composure and continues to navigate the maze, making adjustments and calculations to avoid the Remnants. In the end, he narrowly escapes the Labyrinth by flinging himself through the exit, avoiding the deadly Remnants by mere inches.
Vis, still reeling from his experience in the Labyrinth, navigates a treacherous tunnel system, encountering a series of cryptic writings and symbols. He eventually reaches a chamber with a ring of bronze blades, where he is confronted by a group of shadowy figures. Despite being warned to "complete the journey," Vis is forced to defend himself against the figures, using his wits and cunning to outmaneuver them. With the help of Diago, a wild wolf, Vis fights off his attackers and escapes the tunnel system, but not without suffering serious injuries. As he sits with the dying wolf, Vis reflects on the bond they have formed and the sacrifices that have been made to help him survive. The chapter ends with Vis fading into unconsciousness, his fate uncertain.
Vis wakes up after a traumatic experience, finding himself injured and disoriented. He meets up with his friends Callidus and Aequa, and they discuss their plan to survive the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition at the Catenan Academy. Vis reveals that he stole a tracking plate from one of the safety teams, which could give them an advantage in the competition. However, the plate's stones are Will-bound and don't seem to react to anything. Callidus theorizes that the stones are anchored to a central point, which broadcasts the positions of the students back to the plate. Vis, Callidus, and Aequa decide to use the tracking plate to their advantage, but they also acknowledge the risks and dangers involved. They come up with a plan to split up, with one of them taking their trackers ahead to pretend to ambush the Heart, while the others try to catch up to Indol, a student who has formed an alliance with other students. Aequa stays with Vis, and they prepare to face Indol and his allies, while Callidus takes Vis's medallion and the golden marble to track the Heart. The group says their goodbyes, and Callidus disappears into the forest, leaving Vis and Aequa to continue their mission.
Vis and Aequa discover a mass grave of safety team members and students, all with their heads brutally smashed in. They realize that the Anguis, a terrorist organization, must be behind the attack and that they are trying to exterminate the safety teams and the students. Vis and Aequa decide to warn the other students, starting with Indol, who is closest to them. Vis convinces Indol of the danger and they come up with a plan to scatter and run, using decoy tracks to throw off their pursuers. Indol plans to float his medallion down the river to mislead the Anguis, while Vis and Aequa set out to warn the last remaining team and then meet up with Callidus. Before parting ways, Indol warns Vis to be careful and thanks him for trying to save him, hinting that he may not survive the night. Vis receives a sack of supplies from Indol and sets off to find Emissa, the last remaining team member, and warn her of the danger.
Vis navigates the challenges of the Iudicium, a high-stakes competition at the Catenan Academy, and discovers a mass grave of safety team members and students. He encounters Aequa and Marcellus, and they come up with a plan to warn the other students and take down their opponents. Vis uses his newfound ability to sense the presence of others to evade danger and track down Emissa, who is attempting to retrieve the Heart of Jovan. He encounters a mysterious stranger who reveals that the Anguis is behind the attack and is working with Military to gain control of the Academy. The stranger threatens Emissa's life and forces Vis to agree to compete for the Heart. Vis climbs the tower where the Heart is located and confronts the guard, a large and muscular man who recognizes him as Catenicus.
Vis faces off against a powerful Anguis soldier in a fierce battle to claim the Heart of Jovan, but is aided by Emissa, who kills the soldier. However, Emissa's behavior becomes erratic and suspicious, and she ultimately betrays Vis, stabbing him with an obsidian dagger and pushing him off the tower. As Vis falls to his death, he is left confused and hurt, unsure of why Emissa turned against him. Despite his injuries and desperation, Vis manages to grab the Heart of Jovan before plummeting into the water below, his fate uncertain.
Vis wakes up after being thrown off a tower and finds himself injured and disoriented. He discovers that he has the Heart of Jovan, a valuable object, and that his injuries are not as severe as he expected. Vis meets up with a wild wolf, Diago, who had saved his life, and begins to make his way to his friend Callidus. When he arrives, he finds Callidus badly injured and learns that he was attacked by a member of the Anguis, a terrorist organization. Vis tries to save Callidus, but he eventually dies in Vis's arms. Vis then carries Callidus's body back to the Academy, where he confronts Principalis Veridius and Emissa, who had betrayed him. Vis vows to make them pay for their actions and completes his task by placing the golden pyramid on Jovan's chest, thus winning the Iudicium. Vis then collapses, exhausted and overcome with emotion.
Vis wakes up in the infirmary after a traumatic experience, finding himself injured and disoriented. He is met by Principalis Veridius, who reveals that Vis's left arm has been amputated due to rot. Vis is struggling to come to terms with his new reality and the loss of his friend Callidus. Veridius asks Vis to join Religion and become an Imperator, claiming that it's the only way to avoid another Cataclysm. However, Vis is hesitant and instead decides to join the Censor's office, hoping to make a difference from within. Veridius is displeased with Vis's decision, but Vis is resolute. As Veridius leaves, Vis is left to reflect on his past and his decisions, including his choice to join the Censor's office. He finds a wooden toy ship on his bedside table, which holds sentimental value as it was carved by him as a child. The ship serves as a reminder of his past and his connection to his father.
